Chairman . defends * position To the Editor: In the April 11 edition of The Gamecock, a letter to the editor attacked the student allocations commission (SAC) for "severely jeopardizing" the future quality of TTie Crucible, USC's literary magazine, by refusing "to grant adequate funds for its direction." Let me set the record straight. In order to imDrove and expand the future of The Crucible, SAC felt that they should wave one of the guidelines of the commission, that being a guideline prohibiting "prizes" for various organizations. SAC felt that the incentive of a cash prize would not only attract more submissions to The Crucible, but a higher quality nf ntihm IooIamd Tim ? V* WMMAUIOOIVIIO. The letter compares the responsibilities of the editors of The Gamecock, The Garnet and Black and The Crucible and their differences in funding, and states that, "While it is difficult to evaluate the relative value of these three puDiicauons, it is possible to say that 16,000 copies of The Crucible are printed each year relative to 5,000 of The Garnet and Black and that The Crucible is mailed to colleges throughout the East as a representative of this university . . Let me remind everyone that the Garnet and Black will contain upwards of 600 pages. Even if the number of oaces of Thp rvn??iWo entire year are added, they add up to only one-sixth the number of pages in The Garnet and Black. Likewise, The Gamecock is printed twice a week with an average of 16-20 pages per issue. Multiply that figure by approximately 57 issues and you can see that 9121140 pages of The Gamecock are printed each year. Finally, let me say that The Garnet and Black is not only mailed to colleges throughout the East, but is judged in national competitions and has been ranked extremely high.
