Bell Camp celebrates 1 A*I* ~*"a The day of the fourth was sunny at first. Out at Bell Camp, where several hundred students and faculty members gathered to \ celebrate the birthday of America, I the sun stayed out long enough for i the sack races and the eggI throwing contest. The rains came, and although I there were many disappointed faces crowding together on the i porch and in the lodge to shelter | themselves from the rain, spirits j soon rose again. Everyone at Bell Camp joined together to have a good Fourth, regardless of the weather. Only the water events (tug-ofwar, sandcastle-building, canoe and tube races) were cancelled because of the weather. Between afternoon showers, participants and spectators alike enjoyed the nin ao *?#*# ?.. ? 4 ? ? ? * ~~ 1 pit-cuuii^, watermelon seeGI spitting, and cracker-eating-andi whistling contests. Some people picnicked on the lodge porch or in the lodge, while others joined in the events or played ping-pong, pool, or pinball in the lodgehouse. Around 5 p.m., 'Hickory Grove" entertained with i folk, country, and blue-grass J music. Bob Cantrell, the South I Carolina State Champion clogger L gave a solo performance that B prompted many to 'try their feet' at clogging, or at least squarew dancing. At 8 p.m., celebrators viewed ||| "The Mark of Zorro". The 1 festivities continued at 9:30 with a t fireworks show over the lake, and I then the day was over. It was a day full of fun and frolic, and even the rains could not douse the spirits of R the Bell Camp crowd.
