"WE PLAY almost all the tough teams on the East Coast, and I consider our program to be the best in the East," Hufschmid saia. i ne tougner tne teams are the better we get, and this has improved our program greatly." "We definitely deserve a top 20 ranking. We beat some good teams and a ranking is well deserved," Kefalos said. When Smarr came to Carolina in 1972 from Wingate Junior College, where he won back-to-back national junior college championships, he inherited a team with an 8-11 record the year before. Since then the Gamecocks have compiled records of 224, 26-3, 25-9 and 24-3, and this year's team could possibly win 31 matches. "The first two years we did well with what we had, but I think every year we've gotten better because the schedule gets oeiter, ' smarr said. "We are possibly in our best recruiting year ever, but replacing players such as Jeff Kefalos will be tough." KEFALOS ATTRIBUTES the success of the Carolina tennis program to Smarr. "Smarr is the man who has done everything," he said. "He makes the schedule and recruits the players, and this is what makes a good oroeram." "We have established a tradition in the last five years, and this is what attracts good players," Kefalos said. "Each year the schedule gets more difficult, and each year we have to improve." The outcome of the next seven matches will determine if Carolina receives a top 20 ranking, and Smarr summed it up best when he said, 44We have the winning attitude, and as long as you have that you don't have much chance of losing." ic/^U AUTHC 1 rvnninnui.. i MPORTS B"n9 This Ad ln BBWBB w For A Free Oil FOREIGN CAR REPAIRS chano?
