Ref admitb By RANDY BEARD .Gamecock Sports Writer After losing to a tough Florida Tech team on Saturday 3-1, the USC Soccer Club bounced back on Sunday to blank Flagler College 2-0 in Florida. The first seven minutes against Florida Tech were a nightmare for Coach Yank Albers and his team as Florida Tech took ad vantage of some questionable refereeing to score two goals on the Gamecocks. The officials hurt what would have been a great match between FTU's ALL-America goalie candidate Winston Dubose and Carolina's outstanding freshman goalkeeper Paul Bristol by calling an inconsistent game and by calling the offsides rule wrong. The referee later apologized for his misin terpretation of the offsides rule after looking at the rule book. Tech took advantage of the misinterpretation and scored two offsides goals. Assistant Sports Editor George Morris was quoted saying Billy Baker, this week's leader and Morris' roommate, of calling a famous odds-maker for help. "I was walking into my room," the source quotes Morris as saying, "and I caught Billy on the phone to Las Vegas. I distinctly heard him refer to the other party as "The Greek." He tried to fool me by saying he was taling to Leigh Leventis, but I didn't buy' that." Morris denied the accusation', calling it a "scurillous lie." Carolina's top performers were Bob Day and Leon Cook who tied for first place with a time of 31:31. John Brown placed siith, Gary Hill seventh and Tom Baldassare eighth for the Gamecocks. Coach Bill McClure said he was pleased with the Gamecocks performance. "I was very pleased with the teams per formance because they. ran s6 well as a team," McClure said. McClure said that the times were slower because the course was wet from heavy rains. USC's next meet will be against Auburn at Auburn.
