After losing to a tough Florida
Tech team on Saturday 3-1, the
USC Soccer Club bounced back
on Sunday to blank Flagler
College 2-0 in Florida.
The first seven minutes against
Florida Tech were a nightmare
for Coach Yank Albers and his
team as Florida Tech took ad
vantage of some questionable
refereeing to score two goals on
the Gamecocks.
The officials hurt what would
have been a great match between
FTU's ALL-America goalie
candidate Winston Dubose and
Carolina's outstanding freshman
goalkeeper Paul Bristol by
calling an inconsistent game and
by calling the offsides rule
wrong. The referee later
apologized for his misin
terpretation of the offsides rule
after looking at the rule book.
Tech took advantage of the
misinterpretation and scored two
offsides goals. Gus Romero
scored with just 6:13 gone in the

game and 47 seconds later Mark
Johnston crossed a ball that
curved over Bristol's head into
the goal as he was marking a
FTU player on the far post.
John Rosier scored for
Carolina in the midway point of
the first half to cut the lead to 2-1
at the half. But that was a close
as USC was to get as Mario Isaac
tallied near the end of the game
to expand the lead to 3-1.
USC played their best game on
the road this.year against Flagler
College, a tean they could meet in
the Southeastern soccer tour
nament next month.
Carolina played a brutal
defensive game in shutting out
Flagler with fullback Clark Dean
and goalie Bristol leading the
way. Dean- broke up several
threats including a diving save in
which he cleared the ball off the
goal line. Bristol recorded his
fourth shut out of tihe season.
Kenny Jefferson led Carolina's
offense with a goal in each half
to account for all of the scoring.
USC is now 7-2-2 on the season.

Scandal
From Staff Reports
The first hint of scandal shook
The Gameco.pk prognosticators
this week as a reliable source
quoted one of the predictors ac
cusing a competitor of seeking
professional help in his selections.
Assistant Sports Editor George
Morris was quoted saying Billy
Baker, this week's leader and
Morris' roommate, of calling a
famous odds-maker for help.
"I was walking into my room,"
the source quotes Morris as saying,
"and I caught Billy on the phone to
Las Vegas. I distinctly heard him
refer to the other party as "The
Greek." He tried to fool me by
saying he was taling to Leigh
Leventis, but I didn't buy' that."
Morris denied the accusation',
calling it a "scurillous lie."
"I'd never turn in my room
mate," Morris said, "and besides
he wouldn't have to call Las Vegas
-all he haas to do is ask me for
help."
BAKER, WHO picked 17 of 20
correctly in last week's poll,
ignored the rumor and focused his
attention on his gradual move to
the top.
"Six games don't make a.
season," Baker said, stealing a line
from Carolina coach Jim Carlen.
"I spent five weeks tied for third
place and frankly it was time for a
move. I was either going to the top
or to the bottom and really I think
it's all just a game of luck."
His closest competitors,
however, discount luck as a factor
in their success.
"Everybody always said how
lucky I am," said Sally Wilson,
who is tied for second place with
Bill Outlaw. "Well, I always

Outlaw was even more cocky.
"1o FIGURE I'd give everyone a
chance to catch up with me. I hate
being out in front of the pack,
making everyone look bad,"'
Outlaw said. Outlaw's 13-7 record
tied Morris and Editor Bill Pratt
for the week's worst.
Ray Cooper, the former leader of
this motley crew of so-called ex
perts, fell to fourth place this week,
continuing a steady plunge from
the top spot. For once, Cooper had
nothing to say.
The Gamecock's editor
emeritus, Bill Grant, reacted to his
14-6 record like Paul Dietzel
reacted to last year's loss to
Georgia.
"To paraphrase our former
football coach, my record last
week was one of the most
frustrating I have had since I
started picking football games "
he said. "But I will be back. After
next week the rest of our alleged
experts will be chasing me like a
bunch of gobbling turkeys," he
said.
Morris and staff writer Billy Cox
are tied for sixth. For Morris it's
the same spot he occupied the asst
two weeks, while for Cox it's a step
up.

record moved him into eighth
