Hollings Hollings speaks to law students about admissions By HAROLD REAMES Gamecock Staff Writer U.S. Sen. Ernest F. Hollings said Wednesday he does not think there will ever be a public hearing to "clear the air" on the law school controversy. "According to the Board of Trustees they have have no idea of continuance, from what I understand," Hollings said during Speaker's Hour at the Law Center auditorium. HOLLINGS SAID his idea in requesting a public hearing "is to bring this thing to a head for the good of the University. If they had had a public hearing at the particular time everything would be cleared up." The main issue in the controversy is whether the law school's anonymous grading system was violated, he said. Hollings read statements from a 20-page document put together by State Sen. Edward E. Saleeby, D-Darlington which alleges law school professors violated an anonymous grading system by marking the files of students involved in the Summer Pre-Admissions Trial program (SPAT). THE CONTROVERSY began when the Board of Trustees voted to admit 14 students to the law school who did not qualify for admission after participation in the SPAT program. Hollings' and Saleeby's sons were members of the 14 students in the SPAT program. Hollings' son decided not to return to school. "I did not talk to a single trustee about getting my son into law school," Hollings said. He said he talked to Law School Dean Robert W. Foster about the possibility of his son taking the Law School Admissions test again, but Foster "told me it wouldn't do any good for him to take the LSAT again." HOLLINGS SAID he dislikes anonymous grading systems. If I were a dean, I would not have an anonymous grading system. It puts the student on trial," he said. He said the preponderance of evidence in the Saleeby document shows that professors may have violated the anonymous grading system. He said he has heard that a secretary in the law school was at one time told to mark the files of students. "The academic committee said there is room for argument," Hollings said. "What more powerful statement could there be." HE SAID he had no reason todoubt sworn statements by two students who said they saw one of the professors in the room where the files were kept because "the witnesses were sequestered and came up with the same testimony." "I think now is the time to bring these facts on top of the table," he said. "Certainly I can't prove prejucice on behalf of the professors. I'm trying to bring into perspective that this is something beyond proof." "No one has ever contended that we should fire teachers because someone made a D in the class," Hollings said.
