Go GAMECOCKS! entertainment Bogey's brings the real people together By "LAMAR LARU" Editors Note: The following review is written by a person who does not exist, Lamar Laru. Identity of the writer or writers is, however, not secret and any interested person may find out the author's identity by calling The Gamecock. Hi there glitter guys, sequin sirens and in-people. Well now that it is over, Sept. 12, 1975 will live in the annals of chicdom. For it was on that day that Bogey's officially opened. And what an opening it was. The potted people among the potted plants. What is Bogey's you might ask? Why should it interest you? How was the grand opening? And why was it happening? Well, let's see, where do we begin? BOGEY'S IS a rather new concept in the eating habits of the citizens of Columbia and a rather good concept at that I might add. Real food. Where else can you find fresh fruit, not fresh from a can, but real, fresh, fruit that is cut as it is used. And bread, some of the best tasting I know of, that comes in twice a week from a bakery in Savannah, Ga. And real, live mushrooms flown in from Pennsylvania and real avocados. And by all means, let us not forget the pastries-they are a story in themselves. Flown, in from Atlanta and Savannah, they are a real taste treat to your palate . . . cheese danish, chocolate rum, bagels, croissants and quiche. And if that is not enough, the sandwiches, with those strange sounding names (The Caine Mutiny, The barefoot Contessa, Treasure of Sierra Madre, The African Queen, Key Largo, Casa Blanca, the Bogey Basic) are meaty, delicious and much more. A good selection of cheeses is also featured. When was the last time you had a yogurt sundae, or for that matter, asked to have something special fixed the way you wanted it? Both can be had at Bogey's. And should the regular sandwich be too much for you, you can get a half sandwich. To read the menu is a delight, but to taste the food is a culinary high. At last there is an island of ex cellence amid a pit of fast-food garbage in Columbia. Try it sometimes, you will find it much different. You can only get breakfast and lunch, but then two out of three ain't bad. BUT BACK to the reason that chicdom has a new star in its crown. The best thing about the gala was the crowd. For the people-watching freaks, it was a trip. Towards the end of the evening it was a little difficult to tell where the walls and floors started and the people began. Had it not been for those walls, many people would have melted into the cracks in the floor. And come to think of it, it would not have been all that bad. But come to the gala they did. They came in all shapes and sizes (the rather large and the super thin) colors, life-styles (its kind of fun to watch the washed and great unwashed rub elbows, and other things) economic, social and political persuasions (one can not help but have there mind bogled at how the politicos and their spouses can remember the names of people they have met only once and to greet them as long lost friends . . . . and votes) the hanger oners, the political groupies, and most important, the real people. Supposedly they all came for the gala, but in point of fact, they came to see, to be seen, to be seen with and to be with Pug. For you see, Pug Ravenel was the star of the evening and not Bogey's. Did they come for the free food, the free booze-not really at $35 a couple. I do not want to say that the crowd drank (how much did they drink) but after the party, there was not to be found any champagne, white wine or beer. The little dears had hollow legs and sponges. The movie Casablanca was shown. (Could it be wishful thinking on the part of some people, after all, literally translated Casablanca means White House). I find it fascinating that 450 people could eat and drink so much. I knew that South Carolina had pockets of hunger but this must have been the whole purse. (In fact, that ravenous multitude even ate the table decorations--they were two weeks old and were coated with varnish-you had to be drunk to do it and there to appreciate it ). FOR SOME people there it was their reward for trying to make it to the Capitol with Pug. For some people there it was a free food and drunk. For many of the people there, it was the social event of the season, to be ranked right up there with good ole Sol's retirement and Bryan Dorn's defeat. For many of the people there it was chance to be in the right place at the right time and to be seen doing it. And for far too few people there It was a chance to be with the man they admire and honestly feel got a very rotten raw deal. There you have it, chic lovers and suave sophisticates. For those of you who missed it, may I suggest that you shed a tear or three into you Bill Blass pillow case and muddle on. Perhaps in the future there will be a ''Christmas with Pug Party'' and you will get the chance to redeem yourself. Or perhaps this dark mark on your social standing can be erased by working just a little bit harder for that chic charity. (I understand from usually reliable sources that the kidney is in vog~ue this season). But to the people who really care and'who believe and who work for what they believe, rest assured that in time, things have a way of turning out right. You just have to wait and go for the jugular vein when the time is right. And don not concern yourself about the political groupies and the hanger oners. And again to the real people thank heavens you are there.
