"Ron was in the middle of a big pile-up and he just twisted his knee." By the end of the .-y, though, highly regarded USC quarterback Ron Bass was on the surgeon's table with torn ligaments. The result--Bass will wear a cast for six weeks and his knew will require three months additional recuperation, meaning he will watch the 1975 campaign from the sidelines. The loss of Bass rips an irreparable hole in Carolina's fragile offensive backfield. He participated in pre-season drills with a bursa sack injury before being hurt last week. "It was the type of injury," Carlen said, "that required operation within 14 days in order to assure proper recovery. We had Ron in the hospital that night, with one of the best surgeons available." While Bass's absence is a devastating blow, Carlen said, "We have to llok at the positive side of this thing. Ron will have two years of remaining eligibility instead of one."
