"He didn't take a real hard lick,"
explained USC football coach Jim
Carlen. "Ron was in the middle of
a big pile-up and he just twisted his
knee."
By the end of the .-y, though,
highly regarded USC quarterback
Ron Bass was on the surgeon's
table with torn ligaments. The
result--Bass will wear a cast for six
weeks and his knew will require
three months additional
recuperation, meaning he will
watch the 1975 campaign from
the sidelines.
The loss of Bass rips an
irreparable hole in Carolina's
fragile offensive backfield. The 6
0, 179-lb junior shared the quar
terback position with Jeff Grantz
last year, often depending upon
which of the two had the fewest
bruises.
Last year, in fact, Jay Lynn
Hodgin was forced to abandon his
halfback position temporarily and
play quarterback when both
Grantz and Bass were out.

career, and underwent hamstring
surgery after spring practice. He
participated in pre-season drills
with a bursa sack injury before
being hurt last week.
"It was the type of injury,"
Carlen said, "that required
operation within 14 days in order to
assure proper recovery. We had
Ron in the hospital that night, with
one of the best surgeons
available."
While Bass's absence is a
devastating blow, Carlen said,
"We have to llok at the positive
side of this thing. Ron will have
two years of remaining eligibility
instead of one."
Bass attracted the national
spotlight last season, earning
Sports Illustrated's "Back of the
Week" honors following a two
touchdown, 211-yard rushing
performance in a 31-23 upset of
bowl-bound North Carolina. For
theyear he rushed for 460 yards
and passed for an additional 245.
Carlen had refused to give the
starting nod to either of the ver
terens, but may now be forced to
back up the injury-prone Grantz
with inexperienced sophomore
Randy Martz.
