Gamecocl in First R( From Staff Reports Seeking their first national chaiipionship ever, USC's Fighting Gamecocks leave Columbia at 10:15 a.m. today for Omaha, Neb. and the College World Series Baseball Tour nament. Given a week off after sweeping the NCAA Atlantic Region Baseball Tournament in Columbia May 23-25, Coach Bobby Richard son's Gamecocks worked out Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for Saturday night's encounter with Seton Hall, Nor theast Region winner, at 6 p.m. (EDT). The College World Series is a double elimination tourment in which any school that sustains two Athletic Sc Awarded t BY BILLY BAKER Sports Editor The USC women's sports program has awarded 17 scholarships spanning six sports for the 1975-76 year according to its associate director of women's athletics. Helen Timmermans said that nine of the scholarships have been awarded to current members of the women's sports program. Eight of the scholarships have been awarded to incoming fresh men. One scholarship remains for swimming and volleyball. Three seniors on USC's women's basketball team have received scholarships. They are Denise Nanney, of Spartanburg, Charlene Dubose of Darlington, and Martha Suber of Whitmire. Sandra Sirt, an incoming freshman from Chester was the fourth signee. Gymnastics will have three Swimming Pool, T< For those students interested in swimming or tennis for the sum mer, the Blatt Physical Education Center has announced its schedule. The tennis courts, located on Wheat Street, will be open to students from 1 to 10 p.m. every day. Reservations will start being taken at 10 a.m. every hour on the hour until 5 p.m. Courts can be reserved on the same day, or one Grevey Signs USC Basketball Grant-in-Aid Bryan Grevey, whose brother garnered All-America honors while guiding Kentucky into the NCAA finals last season, has signed a basketball graint-in-aid with the University of South Carolina. All South Carolina games will be originated by WNOK radio in Columbia and with Bob Fulton handling play-by-play and Tom Price doing the color analysis. All games will be played on Omaha's Rosenblatt Municipal Stadium, site of the College World Series for 18 years. The World Series begins Friday with California State-Fullerton (36 13) meeting Arizona State (58-11) at 6 p.m. (EDT), and Texas (48-5) taking on Oklahoma (50-8) at 9 p.m. After South Carolina and Seton Hall meet in Saturday night's opener, Eastern Michigan (35-17) takes on Florida State (49 8) at 9 p.m. The championship game is expected to be played either Thursday, June 12, or the holarships ) Women scholarship performers. Sophomore Patti Morris will join incoming freshman Denise Nolan of Columbia and Laura Kostyshyn of Apalachin, N.Y. Nolan par ticipated in the AAU regionals and Kostyshun co-captained her high school team for two years. Senior Sue Stoll of Livingston, H.J., and sophomore Sue Smith of Greenville are membe-s of USC's women's tennis team who were given scholarships. The third went to Cindy Kincaid of Springfield, Ohio, top ranked player in singles and doubles in state and city tournaments. Nona Kerr, a senior, received a softball grant. She will be joined by freshmen Jean Robbins of Hickory, N.C., and Lauren Hughes of Orlando, Fla. Nancy Grim, a sophomore will join Pennsylvania state champion Christine Hasselburg of Bethel Park, Pa., as two of the three swimming scholarship recipients. mnnis Courts Open day in advance of use. The swimming pool, located in the center of Sumter Street bet wveen the Physical Sciences Center and the Russell House, will be open for students between the hours of 5 and 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 1 and 5 p.m. on Saturday. The new pool in the P.E. Center will not be completed and ready for use this summer. The signing of Grevey was an nounced by USC coach Frank McGuire, who called the Hamilton, Ohio, native "A' great shooter, especially from the long range. He's very aggressive and very strong, and he's never played on a losing team."~ Grevey, whose brother, Kevin, was a standout for the University of Kentucky, is a 6-5, 200-pound forward who missed his entire senior season after undergoing knee surgery. Grevey averaged 17.5 points and 10 reoumds a game dingn his meock seton Hall Series following day, depending upon tournament progress. Earl Bass, 15-0 with a 1.16 earned run average and 148 strikeouts in 128 and two thirds innings, will be South Carolina's opening game pitcher. He defeated Seton Hall 6-5 earlier this 'season in the Stetson Tournament at Deland, Fla. The two teams split games in that tournament, the Pirates--who take a 31-8 record into the World Series winning the second game 4-3. In both previous meetings with Seton Hall, South Carolina's top two sluggers were on the sidelines with injuries. First baseman Hank Small had a pulled rib muscle and left fielder Steve King a pulled hamstring. Small is batting .397 with 18 home runs, 64 runs batted in, and has hit an NCAA record 47 career homers. King is batting .363 with nine homers and 34 RBI's. The fourth-ranked Gamecocks' 47-4-1 record, in addition to being the best record in the nation, has brought additional national publicity to the South Carolina athletic program. Coach Bobby Richardson and his team are featured in the current issue of Sports Illustrated magazine in an article written by Larry Keith, and on Monday, June 9, at 8 p.m. (EDT), the NBC-TV network will air a segment of "The Baseball World of Joe Garagiola," featuring South Carolina and Several other college teams coached by former major league players. North Carolina BY BILLY BAKER Sports Editor The excellent relief pitching of All-America Earl Bass gave Carolina a 4-3 victory over N.C. State in the championship game of the NCAA South Atlantic Regional held recently at the Roost. Bass relieved starter Tim Lewis with one out in the sixth inning and runners at first and second. The stylish righthander, pitching with one days rest, pitched hitless b aseball the rest of the game as his performance helped the Gamecocks advance to the national finals in Omaha, Neb. this week. USC will play Seton Hall this Saturday at 6 p.m. (EDT). Lewis had control problems throughout the game. The tall lefthander worked most batters into full counts and it didn't take junior year at Taft High and was named to the Ohio All-State team in addition to gaining honorable mention All-America honors. A lefthanded shooter, Grevey shot 50 per cent from the floor and 80 per cent from the free throw line in his junior season. He considered Purdue, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech before signing with USC. Grevey is the 'third basketbali prospect signed by South Carolina in 1975. Earlier backcourt stars Bill G;ause of Columbia and Eddie DiRugers of Philadelphia, Pa. signed with IISC' Sports Earl Bass views over the situati against N.C. State. The Wolfpack tied the score in the fourth inning. Outfielder Dan Moore doubled and scored on a home run by Bill Smordic. The first baseman hit three home runs during the tournament. In the sixth inning the Gamecocks scored two runs. Jim Pankovits walked to begin the inning and moved to second when centerfielder Steve Cook reached Kefalos Named For the third straight year Jeff Kefalos has been selected the Most Valuable Player on the University of South Carolina tennis team. Kefalos, a junior from Parkersburg, W. Va., has posted a three-year singles record of 75 wins and 111losses and was 23-2 this past season as the Gamecocks posted a 24-3 mark. "Jeff has just been a consistent winner since he's been here," said Carolina tennis coach lRon Smarr.
