In an effort to combat cultural decay. the College of Arts and Letters has been in the process of celebrating the Third Annual Renaissance Festival. ten days of activities associated with the advent of medieval rebirth. All departments under the College of Arts and Letters, with the help of the University Players, are sponsoring the festivities. Each department (including English. Theatre. Music, Art. Religion. Philosophy, and Foreign Languages) assembles its own program and combines its efforts to establish a total effect. 'What we had." explained Professor Frank Mohler, general chairman of the week's activities, "was a coordinating committee with representatives from each department to get an idea of the general format of the program. We would've liked to have had more student representatives, but in a case like this, the larger the committee. the more problems you're bound to run into. "Personally." Mohler continued, "I think it (the festival) is im portant because it's really the only time that all the departments in the College of Arts and Letters get together for an interdisciplinary affair. We're all working together to create an experience, and that's the vital thing." MN.(ler also said certain courses, Theater 787 (Problems in Theatre Practice. Theatre 789. Problems of Acting. "I think it can be a valid educational experience to sup plement classroom information," he said. So far Prof. Roland Reed's Commedia dell'arte. a corps of actors who follow the leads of the medieval tradition of spontaneous stand-up situation dramas, have drawn much attention. The Festival, which began last Wednesday and ends Saturday following a four-day run of the play "Love's Labor's Lost," started in Capstone's Campus Room with a Renaissance banquet. "The banquet was a tremendous learning experience," admitted Prof. Jerry Curry, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Letters. "In addition. it was higly en tertaining."
