I'he Renaissance. defined as "a
no% ement or period of vigorous
artistic and intellectual activity."
usually has a connotation of being
irrelevant. far away and quite
dead. especially in a social
oriented college atmosphere.
In an effort to combat cultural
decay. the College of Arts and
Letters has been in the process of
celebrating the Third Annual
Renaissance Festival. ten days of
activities associated with the
advent of medieval rebirth.
All departments under the
College of Arts and Letters, with
the help of the University Players,
are sponsoring the festivities.
Each department (including
English. Theatre. Music, Art.
Religion. Philosophy, and Foreign
Languages) assembles its own
program and combines its efforts
to establish a total effect.
'What we had." explained
Professor Frank Mohler, general
chairman of the week's activities,
"was a coordinating committee
with representatives from each
department to get an idea of the
general format of the program.
We would've liked to have had
more student representatives, but
in a case like this, the larger the
committee. the more problems
you're bound to run into.
"Personally." Mohler continued,
"I think it (the festival) is im
portant because it's really the only
time that all the departments in the
College of Arts and Letters get
together for an interdisciplinary
affair. We're all working together
to create an experience, and that's
the vital thing."
MN.(ler also said certain courses,
Theater 787 (Problems in Theatre
Practice. Theatre 789. Problems
of Acting. Rehearsal and Per
formance> and Art History
<Seminar on Michelangelo> were
designed to become involved in the
festival.
"I think it can be a valid
educational experience to sup
plement classroom information,"
he said.
The USC campus is currently
saturated with cultural charisma,
ranging from art exhibits to

The Festival, which began last

following a four-day run of the play
"Love's Labor's Lost," started in
Capstone's Campus Room with a
Renaissance banquet.
"The banquet was a tremendous
learning experience," admitted
Prof. Jerry Curry, assistant dean
of the College of Arts and Letters.
"In addition. it was higly en

attendance was close to 50 per cent
or nearly 10 per cent more than the
previous year.
Curry said "a banquet like this
can give you a real feel for the
atmosphere of the Renaissance.
For instance, I'd heard the music
before, but I'd never seen it per

picture.
"You could also capture the
vitality aspect of Renaissance art
when it was seen in this setting.
