UNC victo BY BETSY WILCOX Of The Gamecock staff The USC men's tennis team was handed its third loss in 21 outings as they were defeated 8-1 by the University of North Carolina. UNC, the number one team in the ACC, and the number seven team in the 1974 NCAA's, has a season record of 23-1. In singles competition, Clyde Skaflestad posted USC's only win against the Tar Heels, as he downed UNC's number one seed, Bill Brock, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. "Clyde played his best match of the year," said coach Ron Smarr. Skaflestad is 15-9 on the season. Three other three-setters proved to be the downfall of the Gamecocks, as Jeff Kefalos fell to Joe Garcia, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. Phil Dukes was defeated by Earl Hassler, 6-1, 3-.6, 6-4, and previously unbeaten Jeff Hull was downed by June Chatman, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Hull's singles record is now 20 1. "Phil had a ten day lay-off and he was kind of stale for Sunday's match. It hurt him," said Smarr. "Kefalos had Garcia at match point twice, but couldn't win," he added. In doubles competition, UNC's Bill Brok and Tom Dixon defeated Clyde Skaflestad and Andreas Hufschmid, 6-1, 6-3. "After losing five singles, the guys were not giving it their all in doubles. Kefalos and Hull have the best doubles record with eighteen wins and three losses," Smarr said. Geller and Dukes have a doubles record of seventeen and two, and Skaflestad and Hufschmid have a record of eleven and eleven. "This was our first loss on the road and to the best team we have played this year," same Smarr. "They gave a good performance, and with a little luck we could have gone into the doubles, 4-2," he said. Smarr said the team's goal is to win the next three matches and send the four top players to the NCAA's, June 16-21, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The decision on who will go will not be made utnil after the Davidson match. The Gamecocks go against Georgia Tech on Saturday and then Georgia Southern on Sunday. This match was rained out earlier and rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Maxcy-Gregg courts. Georgia Southern has an over all record of 15-2, having lost to Florida and Kentucky. This will be USC's last home match.
