Track tea records ii BY BILLY COX Of The Gamecock staff The Gamecock track team traveled to Orlando, set two school records (the 18th and 19th marks to fall this year), and captured five first place spots, but still went down to defeat at the hands of the University of Florida 85-60. "I think Florida is going to be a top contender for the outdoor championship, no question about it," analyzed USC Coach Bill McClure. He pointed out that "a lot of our good events were their good events, and that makes it rough when you face a team with their depth." "I think both teams were hampered by injuries," McClure continued, "but I'd say they balanced each other out." Ron Adams and Titus Briggs, for in stance, didn't jump as well as they could, but they still turned in good performances," he said. Adams, bothered by a thigh injury, took first in the triple jump with what could be considered a sub-par performance, against a man who had jumped 53 the week Truitt retui grades dec 4 BY GEORGE MORRIS Of The Gamecock staff USC freshman basketball player Billy Truitt returned to campus early this week, but refused to comment on why he left school following the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Truitt, from Lackawanna, N.Y., did not return to school with his teammates after Carolina's 86-67 loss to Princeton in the quar terfinal round of the NIT in March. Associate head basketball coach Don Walsh spoke with Truitt, and Walsh said Truitt's actions stemmed from personal reasons. Walsh would not say why Truitt left school, saying it would invade Truitt's privacy. "The only way to explain Billy Truitt is to go into personal things like his academic records and things like that. We're not going to answer any of this stuff for the record. I don't think it's right," Walsh said. "Right now he's talking to me and he's talking to his teachers and trying to get his academic part straightened out. And then he's going to have to decide what he's going to do. He never officially withdrew from school. He may do it soon, but he hasn't done it yet," Walsh said. Walsh said that he is not sure whether Truitt will return to USC next year, and said the grades will be a major factor in such a decision. "He doesn't know right now, but that's (returning next year) definitely an option open to him, if he can. He knows that. The kid's got himself in a hole academically. lHe can get out of It and we're trying to help him that way. I told him we'd help him any way we could here or anywhere else within our power. There's only so much you can do," Walsh aid. m sets two i Florida d Bob Day before. "Just you how much statistics mean on paper," intoned McClure. Bob Day established a new mark in the 3-mile run with a 14:02.5 trot, while Steve Wilson eclipsed the old high jump record with a 6'9%" finish. Jerry Morrison's 53'1%" shot put thrust not only earned first in the event, but was also his finest personal attempt. Jeff Fuge slung the discus 154.1%" and Alan Shoultz ran the 440 hurdles in 52.7, both personal bests also. John Brown paced the field in the 880 with 1:51.4 attempt, and Titus Briggs took a first in the long jump. USC's 440 relay squad also grabbed top spot with 44 second rns to USC, ide future Donnie Walsh Truitt's future as a USC basketball player remains un certain, but Walsh's comments indicate that Truitt will be a student again for at least a few more weeks. Whether Billy Truitt will play basketball next year may depend on just how good a student he is. 3 Classes: school .ef eat ~ Steve Wilson flat. McClure now turns his attentions to a dual meet with Georgia at Athens on Saturday. "They've got some key injuries, too," noted McClure. "It may depend on whether they can recover by this weekend. I think we're better off depth-wise, and I'd have to call us favorites in this one," he said.
