Foreignpol travel for p Three experts in Japanese foreign policy are traveling more than 6,700 miles to teach USC students about their country's role in world affairs. Their trips are part of a unique program at USC to give American students first-hand knowledge of basic Japanese foreign policy. According to Dr. Richard L. Walker, director of the Institute of International Studies at USC, "This is the first time an American university has sought to teach a course on foreign policy of one of the major powers by bringing several outstanding specialists from that country over here to give the feeling, depth and cultural approach of their country to American' students." The three, Hisao Iwashima, Masashi Nishihara and Masataka Kosaka, along with Dr. Gaston Sigur, director of the Institute of Sino-Soviet Studies at George Washington University, are par ticipating this semester in a graduate level seminar in Japanese foreign policy. The course was designed to give students background information about Japan, a nation which will be a significant factor in world affairs in the decades ahead. This unusual and pioneering course will offer an opportunity to exchange views, observe attitudes, note differences in expression and approach and relate to some of the best representatives of another culture. Iwashima, a professor of political communication and in ternational relations at the National Defense College in Tokyo, is currently on campus. He is a specialist in Japanese defense policies. Each of the visiting experts will participate in structured weekly seminars, as well as meet with students during the day. Following Iwashima will be Nishihara, associate professor of political science at Kyoto Sangyo University, who is the outstanding young scholar in the field of Japanese relations with the Third World, particularly Southeast Asia. The third visiting expert will be Kosaka, professor on the faculty of law at Kyoto University. He specializes in Japan's relations with the world's major powers and has appeared in print and on television in both Europe and America.
