Slated for new transmitters are Bates West,' Cliff Apartments, McBryde Quadrangle and the Towers complex. Minor repairs in Preston, Woodrow and Maxcy will be completed by mid February. The difficulties in the Women's Quadrangle were' corrected last week. Ed Turner, manager of WUSC, believes the failure of the radio station located at 730 AM, to transmit effectively lies with the maintenance department and the students themselves. "The problem with the Towers," Turner said, "is that the transmitter is located in the main lobby. Cables from the transmitter run outside and across the roofs. The students throw beer bottles on the roof, not realizing or caring that they cut our cables. This is especially true of Snowden, where our cables are hanging by a few strands." To combat this, WUSC is trying to get lead pipes to protect the cables on the roofs. However, there is a slow response from maintenance to get the job done. The reason WUSC is having difficulty with its transmission around campus is because the station operates on the carrier current system. Steve Valk, WUSC news director said, the system is similar to that of a closed circuit TV set up. Each dorm is a separate unit with its own transmitter. By utilizing the electrical system to carry the radio* signal, each transmitter boosts the signal fed to it by the cables. The tendendancy for transmitter failure or cables being cut has been common in the last few months. Rumors that the fraternity houses of McBryde Quadrangle would be torn down left no need to put in new transmitters. An open-air frequency would allow the radio signal to reach all campus and off campus areas without the use of cables. The result would be a clearer signal and a system with less problems.
