Despite problems, the telephone company would rather - keep the student as a customer, but if bills begin to accumulite, necessary action must be taken. Tom Poage, the public relations director at Southern Bell said that cancellation of service is a last resorf.t "We make every effort to contact the student. It is very rare that we will cut out service altogether." In the case of a user forgetting to pay his bill, Poage outlined the collection treatment procedures. "If the student receives a bill on Dec. 1, he won't get a reminder to pay-that bill until Dec. 19. Should the bill not be paid by then, another reminder is sent out five days later to both the student and our credit office. "It is very expensive for us to cancel a student's STAN number," Poage said. "It involves a lot of paperwork and a lot of time." Poage said he is not surprised by the use of false STAN num bers. "I have no idea how many students use fake STAN numbers but I imagine there are some who do."
