Up to X per cent of USC
students have had some, sort of
trouble with telephone bill
payment according to Jim
Leland, district manager of
Southern Bell in Columbia.
Despite problems, the
telephone company would rather
- keep the student as a customer,
but if bills begin to accumulite,
necessary action must be taken.
Tom Poage, the public
relations director at Southern
Bell said that cancellation of
service is a last resorf.t
"We make every effort to

Correction
Last Monday's edition of The
Gamecock carried an article
quoting Student Sen. Jim Stuart as
saying he thought the senate had
done a poor job last semester.
Actually, Stuart said his
negative remarks were referring
to last year's senate, and that he
thinks the senate this year is doing
"a fine job." The Gamecock
regrets the error.

not having the money at the time.
We realize this and try to make
some sort of agreement with the
student. It is very rare that we
will cut out service altogether."
In the case of a user forgetting
to pay his bill, Poage outlined the
collection treatment procedures.
"If the student receives a bill
on Dec. 1, he won't get a
reminder to pay-that bill until
Dec. 19. Should the bill not be
paid by then, another reminder is
sent out five days later to both the
student and our credit office. The
student is given another week to
py the 'bill until service is
cancelled."

In the course of a month, Poage
estimates about only 10 Student
Telephone Account Numbers
(STAN) have to be cancelled. "It
is very expensive for us to cancel
a student's STAN number,"
Poage said. "It involves a lot of
paperwork and a lot of time."
Poage said he is not surprised
by the use of false STAN num
bers. "I have no idea how many
students use fake STAN numbers
but I imagine there are some who
do."
When a student finds a call that
he did not credit to his STAN
number, it should be reported at
