Leventis, beginning his second semester as presidentj One reason for sta reaction to SGA was the executive and legi said "respect has increased for the student government from the administration and some from the students.." A reason for this, he said, is "we've tried to help individuals." Leventis, who served as a senator and as vice-president of SGA, com pared earlier semesters with last fall. "Our persuasive power's increased," he said, "and really that's all we have." He explained that SGA is similar to a recommendation body which goes through the higher administrative chan nels.' .A lack of student input could be hampering SGA's potential, Leventis said. Leventis said he tries to find new ideas to work on, and wants more ideas from students. Students hav e more respect for government now than before, Leventis noted, although in a group of students there would probably be negative comments about SGA. One reason for students' negative reaction to SGA, Leventis said, was the quarrel between the executive and legislative branches of government last fall. Edwards was sworn in as South Carolina's first Republican governor in almost 100 years Wednesday. At about 12:20 p.m., before a crowd of several thousand people, Edwards became South Carolina's 86th governor. - The oath of office was ad ministered by the State Supreme Court Justice. Also becoming state officials were Harvey, as lieutenant governor and seven other constitutional officers. The lengthy ceremony began at 8:30 a.m. with a prayer service at Trinity Episcopal Church followed by an inaugural parade at 10 a.m. and then the inaugural ceremony. In an optimistic speech, Ed wards asked the South Carolina people to join in on "a new beginning" and further stated that he had "confidence in what the future holds." Leventis explained the SGA president serves as an ex of ficio member on the board and does not have a vote. Upon taking office, Edwards said "You have given me your confidence and I accept the responsibility." Edwards also said that "this ad ministration will be reform minded." Edwards takes over as governor of South Carolina with the long range energy program for the state in doubt and a total unemployment rate of 6 per cent, almost as high as the national average.
