Sports Editor PROVIDENCE - New Englanu ders couldn't wait for the match up of Providence College and Carolina in the finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference's (ECAC) Ocean State Holiday Basketball Classic, but along the way Carolina ran into a roadblock named St. John's. - St. John's, Frank McGuire's alma nater, defeated the Gamecocks in an overtime thriller 78-77 in semifinal action. In the championship game St. John's outplayed Providence 91-79 and the roof fell in on the Gamecocks, as Boswell sat on the bench with his foot in a cast, and Drake stormed past Carolina 92-71. Carolina was the tournaments top-seed and in their 'first game they looked it. Carolina defeated the Greyhounds of Assumption 113 81. Carolina shot a sizzling 57.6 per cent from the floor for the game and only scored eight points less than the all time scoring record at Carolina. Gamecock center .Tom Boswell was outstanding in the midst of a strong team effort by Carolina. Boswell scored 32 points, hitting 14 of 18 shots from the floor. St. Johns went on to win the tournament, defeating Providence and ending the Friars 52 game at home win streak. The CarolinaL-St. John's game was easily - the most exciting matchup of the tournament. The game was close throughout with 11 ties in the first half and Carolina held a one point lead at in termission, 40-39. The Redmen of St. John's took the lead early in the second half and stayed in control for almost all of the second half. With eight minutes remaining in the game St. John's took a seven point lead on a goaltending call on Alex English (one of three on English for the night) at 57-50. At this point Carolina started a comeback that St. John's coach Lou Carnesecca called, "One hell )f a comeback". With 12 minutes b go in the game Boswell had his rourth foul and a seat on the bench. With 58 seconds left in the game Gilloon drove down the lane double pumped and tied the score at 66-66. St. John's took the ball down the court and then called time out with 43 seconds to go. Carolina played a tenacious defense for the 43 seconds and forced the game Into over-time when a desperation shot from the corner missed. The lead see-sawed back and forth through the overtime but it wasn't to be on -this day for the Gamecocks.. English missed the first shot but sank the second and the Gamecocks trailed 76-75. Carolina's defense came alive again and produced the biggest break in the game. The ball went to Davis in the corner and he took a long shot that did not drop. Carolina had to foul and they fouled the Redmen's 5-10 guard Frank Alagia who went to the line and hit two clutch free throws to give the Redmen a three point lead. St. John's let Mark Greiner get the last bucket and time ran out with the Gamecocks trailing by one very large point. The Gamecocks met Drake in the battle for third place and after the shocking outcome probably wished they hadn't played at all. Carolina lost by the score of 92-71. McGuire said after the game, "If you think we were cold against St. John's we were frozen tonight. We tried everything but we couldn't do anything." Boswell sat out this game with Drake as his ankle was in a cast in iopes that he would be ready for ,he Manhattan game.
