PROVIDENCE - New Englanu
ders couldn't wait for the match up
of Providence College and Carolina
in the finals of the Eastern College
Athletic Conference's (ECAC)
Ocean State Holiday Basketball
Classic, but along the way Carolina
ran into a roadblock named St.
John's. -
St. John's, Frank McGuire's
alma nater, defeated the
Gamecocks in an overtime thriller
78-77 in semifinal action. In the
championship game St. John's
outplayed Providence 91-79 and the
roof fell in on the Gamecocks, as
Boswell sat on the bench with his
foot in a cast, and Drake stormed
past Carolina 92-71.
Carolina was the tournaments
top-seed and in their 'first game
they looked it. Carolina defeated
the Greyhounds of Assumption 113
81. Carolina shot a sizzling 57.6 per
cent from the floor for the game
and only scored eight points less
than the all time scoring record at
Carolina.
Gamecock center .Tom Boswell
was outstanding in the midst of a
strong team effort by Carolina.
Boswell scored 32 points, hitting 14
of 18 shots from the floor. The New
England fans were forewarned
about, a freshman guard named
Jack Gilloon and they were not

disappointed. Gilloon and com
pany put on a show in the.
Providence Civic Center that
brought back memories of Ernie
DiGregorio to the 11,331 present
that night.
Carolina's next assignment was
St. Johns and a crushing overtime
lois to the Redmen dropped the
Gamecocks into the consolation
game. St. Johns went on to win the
tournament, defeating Providence
and ending the Friars 52 game at
home win streak.
The CarolinaL-St. John's game
was easily - the most exciting
matchup of the tournament. The
game was close throughout with 11
ties in the first half and Carolina
held a one point lead at in
termission, 40-39.
The Redmen of St. John's took
the lead early in the second half
and stayed in control for
almost all of the second half. With
eight minutes remaining in the
game St. John's took a seven point
lead on a goaltending call on Alex
English (one of three on English
for the night) at 57-50.
At this point Carolina started a
comeback that St. John's coach
Lou Carnesecca called, "One hell
)f a comeback". With 12 minutes
b go in the game Boswell had his
rourth foul and a seat on the bench.
KicGuire made his move with ten
minutes to go in the game and it
paid off. Boswell's presence keyed

With 1:35 left in regulation
Boswell wrestled for the ball, fell to
the ground spraining his ankle and
also fouling out of the game. With
58 seconds left in the game Gilloon
drove down the lane double
pumped and tied the score at 66-66.
St. John's took the ball down the
court and then called time out with
43 seconds to go. Carolina played a
tenacious defense for the 43
seconds and forced the game Into
over-time when a desperation shot
from the corner missed.
The lead see-sawed back and
forth through the overtime but it
wasn't to be on -this day for the
Gamecocks.. Witi 1:10 left in the
game and St. John's in the lead 76
74 via a disputed goaltending call
on English, English went to the foul
line with a chance to tie the game
up. English missed the first shot
but sank the second and the
Gamecocks trailed 76-75.
Carolina's defense came alive
again and produced the biggest
break in the game. They held St.
John's to five seconds on the in
bound pass and the ball was
Carolina's with 40 seconds to go in
the game. The ball went to Davis
in the corner and he took a long
shot that did not drop.
Carolina had to foul and they
fouled the Redmen's 5-10 guard
Frank Alagia who went to the line
and hit two clutch free throws to
give the Redmen a three point
lead. St. John's let Mark Greiner
get the last bucket and time ran out
with the Gamecocks trailing by one
very large point.
The Gamecocks met Drake in
the battle for third place and after
the shocking outcome probably
wished they hadn't played at all.
Carolina lost by the score of 92-71.
McGuire said after the game, "If
you think we were cold against St.
John's we were frozen tonight. We
tried everything but we couldn't do
anything."
Boswell sat out this game with
Drake as his ankle was in a cast in
iopes that he would be ready for
,he Manhattan game. The
:amecocks missed Boswell and
his was not only obvious to Bob
Dousy and Red Auerbach of the
Boston Celtics, who came to see
%im play, but it was also obvious to
he sellout crowd that was waiting
.o see the Championship game.
Bright spots for the Gamnecocks
in the ECAC Ocean State Classic
were, of course, their first round
victory, the selection of Mike
Dunleavy on the first team all

tion of Tom Boswell to the second
team all tournament team.
