GAMECOCK "It Is a mewspaper's duty to print the news, and raise hell." WILBL' F. STOREY BILL GRANT. Editor BILL OUTLAW ART 'R NK Editorial Page Editor Advertising Manager November 11, 1974 Teacher evaluation: A political football Last Wednesday, the student senate, in its collective wisdom, eliminated the Student Government Association's teacher evaluation project. In doing so, they have suspended one of the most potentially wor thwhile SGA events planned for the yeAr. The senate's main beef, or so it seemed on the surface, was that the project , in the words of the bill's author, can no longer serve the purposes for which it was designed. What was not mentioned was all of the student government infighting which doomed the project from the start. The senate has been haggling over the teacher evaluation project for months. It has been talked and talked about until"it has been beaten into the ground." Back in early October, a similar bill to the one passed last week was narrowly defeated. Predictably, those working with the project took that vote as a signal from the, senate to proceed with the project. But, no, the matter was bruoght up at subsequent senate meetings until its death last week. The underlying reasons for the project's demise are clear to those who have any dealings with the senate. The running battle between the SGA's legislative and executive branches over budgetary matters certainly played a factor. Another factor is a petty personality clash between the former Secretary or Academic Af fairs, Henry Stillmack, and the senate over how the project should be administered. So now we have some 10,000 teacher evaluation questionaires sitting in the student government office, where they presumably will sit collecting dust until who knows when. The senate is right in declaring that the project would have been virtually useless if attempted this late in the semester. Pre-registration started in all departments acrosscampus last week and most students have a vague idea of what their spring schedule will look like. But, given a little cooperation within SGA, the project could have been completed in time to provide a valuable service to the student body. If such a project is to be recognized as any kind of "success" it takes months of planning and organization, and hand-in-hand, a firm knowledge of how much ofa budget one has to work with. Questionaires have to be printed, volunteer workers solicited and schedules organized, all of which takes considerable time and money. One of the main faults with past teacher evaluation projects has been the rather haphazard way in which it was thrown together, all in an attempt to get it to the students before registration. Cooperation btween all branches of student government, rather than the harrassing tactics of the student senate could have eliminated many of the problems.connected with the project. One cannot complete a project of such a large scale, if one has to work with the threat of one's budget being revoked at any given moment at the whim of the student senate. .-WCG Looking f After nine years of, using the same toothpaste(Pepsodent), I have decided 'to switch brands. Why change after nine years? Well, I kept getting promises that my teeth would get whiter each year with continued usage .of Pepsodent and one day they w4uld nationally ranked and I would be going to the Sink Bowl for a national brush-off. These promises proved to be futile. One year, after much drilling, I did make it to one of the lesser Sink Bowls, but things haven't been to good lately. This yearmy hopes were as high as they could be. Pepsodent told me my teeth would soon start turning to gold. But, alas, tis the same old story. Not wanting to make a hasty decision about switching brands (I'm tired of having too many cavities), I decided to get a search committee to investigate the matter. I have always wanted the whitest teeth in the country and I must get the best toothpaste around. The search committee has been running into problems. It seems they can't decide on whether or not to go with a big name toothpaste or LETTERS Writers de fend Afro corerage TO THE EDITOR: I would like to respond to Paul Forte Jr.'s letter to -the editor entitled, "Afro coverage shows racial bias." Forte seems quite perturbed about your supposedpy biased coverage of the Afro policy incident. Throughout his letter, Forte constantly harps on the fact that the articles were on Throughout his letter, Forte constantly harps on the fact that the articles on Afro's policies were on the front page four consecutive issues. He claims such coverage is an example of racism I suggest to him that these articles merited front page coverage. The Afro American Student Association is allocated $11,700 for its activities. This is more than just a drop in the bucket. Since this money comes from the pockets of all USC students, and since The Gamecock is the student newspaper, then I again suggest these articles warranted front page coverage. Whenever there is the slightest doubt as to how student money is being used or abused, The Gamecock is obligated- to inform the students of the situation and keep them up to date on it. As to the placement of these articles, I will run the risk of sounding repetitious and say the coverage was justified, but regardless of this, Forte would have cried if it was on the back page. Why, Mr. Forte, can't you accept criticism as being just that: criticism. Why must you equate it to racism? If what was said about Afro's policies was untrue then go ahead and defend its policies by fact, not by claiming the ac cusations were racist attacks on the organization. I'm one of the white folks who is getting sicke of or a chang Bill'i Coiu whether to try a toothpaste that hasn't been tested on an adult's teeth. It seems the toothpaste that doesn't have a name has a good reputation, but his reputation has been built on keeping children's teeth clean, not adults. Another problem tne seiren committee is running into is the brand name dilemma. It has been pointed out that Pepsodent already had a big name when it was brought in to do the job, and it still didn't get the job done. Such big names as Crest, Ultra-brite, Colgate and Baking Soda have been mentioned, but look at the teeth they've had to work with. All of the big name toothpastes have been proven to have fewer cavities. Their record shows it. The unnamed toothpaste also had a low percentage of cavities, but big brand names are needed to get the right kind of toothbrush. )... Afro covera, that nonsense. I have not been brought up to be prejudiced; far from it. I have never considered myself as such. What I am, Mr. Forte, is fed up! Fed up with trying to dig up reasons to stay that way, when all you are doing is giving me and others like me reasons not to. You will surprise me if you print this as it is, not because it does not agree with your policies, but because you have already done Forte and his cause a great in justice. You printed his letter. JOHN CUCINELLO TO THE EDITOR: In response to Paul Forte's letter, I forward the following opinion. Apparently, Forte took Pe rsonal affront to the series of front page artIcles discussing -the alleged misuse of the funds regardin~g the Association of Afro American Students. Forte's assumption The Gamecock staff jumped on the white racist anti-baick bandwagon just to make scathing remarks and apply verbal lashings to the op pressed backs of the long-suffering black rpulation here at USC.. Reay, r.'Forte! $1,400 is certainly viable front page material. Furthermore, if the homecoming queen was short changed on editorial space and has a gift for longwinded hyperbole, as does Mr. Forte, perhaps she would be kind enough to submit to The Gamecock ex tolling her attributes. The kind of toothbrush you have depends upon the calibre of bristles you have. If you don't have good bristles, you aren't going to have a good toothbrush. If you don't have a good toothbrush, how can you keep your teeth clean? The problem seems to be that some of the bristles composing the toothbrush might not want to be on the tooth brush unless the right kind of toothpaste is used. Since my teeth are the most important part of my body, I must take care of them. I've always wanted to have the best and cleanest teeth around because I just can't be seen by other with yellow teeth filled with cavities. I may have neglected some other parts of my body', but, after all, my teeth are what other people see first. e...intramurals Chi Psi not involved in fighting incident TO THE EDITOR: The last paragraph of "USC's Intramural Football Program Suspended", an article appearing In the October 28th Gamecock Implied that Chi Psi Fraternity had been involved in the fighting that has occured during this season's intramural football games. I would like to put this implication in its proper perspective. The aforementioned paragraph states that Robert E. Alexander, dean of student activities; Michael Compton, adviser to the Greeks and Robert Dalrymple, director of Intramurals, had issued a warning directly towards Chi Psi and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternities that further fighting would jeapordize the entire Intramurals program. The warning-was directed at all teams competing In the intramural program, not at Chii Psi In par ticular. Alexander, Comptoni and Dairymple had decided a warning was necessary In view of incidents of past fighting between other teams. The Chii Psi -Kap Alpha Psi game warn schedule at 4:30 i the afternoon of the day this decision was made. The warning was issued during the Chii Psi - Kappa Alpha Psi game merely for convenience and was in no way a reflection of past fighting by Chii Psi fraternity.
