Rookies State 'What may be the best single group of swimming recruits ever assembled at Carolina showed their ability Wednesday with a 90 23' rout of South Carolina State in an exhibition meet at the USC Pool. While neither the victory nor even the runaway. score was unexpected, the Gamecocks' performance was especially pleasing to swimming coach Alan Gentry.l "I thought thqy looked good and aggressive. The freestylers looked very good, but the stroke men haven't done much work, so they're rusty at this point," he said. "This, we believe, is the best recruiting year we've had, based on the fact that we've got guys with national class attitude. Some of these guys have swam in national AAU meets, so we've got a group. with a wide background covering a wide range of strokes. Also, we've got some others with not as much background, but great ability that's just now coming out. Some of these guys will battle up perclassmen for their spots and they all will provide depth'" The Gamecocks won 12 of the 13 events, losing only the 400-yard freestyle relay on a disqualification. .Double winners were Barney Giese in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, Mike Sullivan in the 200-yard freestyle anod 200-yard backstroke, Gary Jameson in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, and Clark Hare in the one-meter and three-meter diving. Single winners were, Steve Breiter, 200yard butterfly; Mike Grissino, 200-yard breaststroke; and Greg Midwinter, 500-yard freestyle. The Chicks have a 84 record to date with only one regular season match left on its schedule. While 8 9 is riot a particularly impressive mark, Hamilton feels it is a credible one.
