Professional pessi Georg Vince Dooley is what one might call a professional pessimist. Given even the brightest of silver linings, the Georgia coach is likely to find a dark spot in the cloud. So, after the Bulldogs 52-14 rout of Carolina, Dooley still magaged to find something to coMlain about. He not only lamen the suspension of 10 players for breaking curfew, he even found something about the game to fret about. He said: "We are not the defensive team we should be. South Carolina only scored 14 points, but had we not scored 52 points, there's no telling how many they would have scored. Jayvee team Gives USC Football win Freshman Britt Parish kicked a 37-yard field goal for the USC jayvee football team with 58 seconds remaining to beat Georgia Tech's jayvees 23-20 Friday night at Grant Field in Atlanta. The Biddies were tariling 14-0 at halftime, but came back in the second half to beat Tech, which last week beat Alabama's JV team 17-8. After Parrish's field goal, Tech drove deep into Carolina territory, but Biddle defensive back Lance Garrett intercepted a pass at the USC nine with nine seconds remaining to be played. Georgia's offense didn't just keep the bal, they owned it. The Bulldogs piled up a total of 568 yards, 502 of them coming via the run, Georgia even used the play that was so successful for Carolina last year, the halfback pass, and ran a few plays out of the unusual "diamond formation." Once the game got out of hand, as it did in the third quarter, Dooley substituted freely, and it was obvious that the only Bulldog that stood no chance of playing was the punter. Only three times in the game did Georgia find itself in a Randy Chastain two-yard run, the other on an i8yard pass from quarterback Chris Cowan, a sophomore. Kevin Long, also a sophomore, scored USC's other touchdown on a two-yard run. The player suspension was discussed by Dooley at length, though not in detail . "These players, in no particular order, missed curfew for various reasons: Vern Smith, Ken Helms, Steve Davis, Dave Christianson, Rayfield Williams, David McKnight, Jim Baker, Wallace Wiggins, Cooper Gunby and Robert Wilson. Wiggins has been dismissed from the team." Of the players suspended, three Cross coul Loses to Carolina's cross country team lost its first dual meet of the season Friday, 25-32 at' Furman, which is now undefeated after four meets. Furman :s Jim Rasch was the top individ ual runner, finishing the 5.2 mile course in 26:14, one second ahead of Carolina's Bob Day. "It was a good meet," Carolina coach Bill McClure said Sunday. "We feel like our kids ran well, although our fourth and fifth men didn't finish as high as we hoped they would. We would have liked them to be closer." McKnight was permitted to play in the game for what Dooley called "extenuating circumstances." The only ex planation offered as to why the players missed curfew was a beer. party that some were involved in. Dooley issued no comment as to why Wiggins was dismissed. As one might expect, Dooley did have more that gloomy words following the victory. "I'm proud of the people who steDDed forward in the circumstances that existed. Both our centers were suspended, and Will Legfg did a good job there. Dooley even managed a grin when asked about what was a difficult week for him following the upset last week to Mississippi State and the players suspension. This wasn't the toughest week I've ever been through, but I've been through some real tough ones. Yesterday I was feeling down, but I'm really high now," Dooley, who did not attend the beer party, said. Georgia From Page Seven The game got hopelessly out of hand in the third quarter. Georgia scored on their first possession, and cornerback Steve Taylor in tercepted a Grantz pass to set up another touchdown a minute later. Dooley began to substitue freely at this point, and the subs put 17 more points on the board in the final period. Carolina rushed for 216 yards in the game, but managed only 21 yards in the air. The Gamecocks threw the ball seven times, only completing one pass. Quarterback Ron Bass, who played sparingly in the game, would have liked to have seen more USC passing. "We couldn't run with any consistency. We never had any good field position, and we always had a long way to go. It looks like running isn't going to get us there,"he said. b0IATIO N DN Verdi's "La Traviata," the ions, will be enhanced and , October 11, 1974 rid most respected European temporary dance idiom in a nd Russian influences.
