While other positions score touchdowns and pile up impressive statistics, Jerry Witherspoon makes their job a lot easier. Playing his last year at Carolina, Witherspoon played guard in both the pro-set offense that the Gamecocks ran in 1972 and the veer, that is used now. Along with most people, he is glad the switch was make. "The veer makes it easier on the offensive linemen, was just straight ahead blocking and you had to overpower your man. It was really tough because at the time we didn't have any experienced linemen playing that position, and it was tough on us then. "All through childhood, if you grow up sort of rough, you played football and that's an easy way to have a physical battle. People love competition, and I think that footbal' helps discipline the in dividual. Football has a great many good aspects about it." An All-State lineman in high school, Witherspoon made Carolina his choice over most of the area schools, as well as others, such as Nebraska. He has no complaints about his decision, and Paul Dietzel has been more than pleased with his play. Although nagged by a persistent injury, he is expected to be atop performer for the 1974 Gamecocks. "Jerry has always had this bad heel;" Dietzel said. "I think he must have a spur in his heel because it never seems to heal up. For that reason he has slowed down speed-wise but he gets by on strength. He's smart, he's tough, and he's a heck of a kid. He doesn't make many mistakes and he is very steady, and I think he's one of the leaders on the offensive line." As far as the future is concerned, Witherspoon has adapted a wait and-see attittme~ An accounting major, he hopes to "just get a job and make some money."
