Die tzel e Grantz ai BY BILLY BAKER Gamecock Staff Writer Jeff Grantz is Carolina's bedt bet for All-America honors -this year even with Paul Dietzel's decision to play backup quarterback Ron Bass nearly as much. "Ithink Ron runs just aboit as well as I do, and I pass just about as yell as he, so there is no reason whywe shouldn't play about the same aanoWit of time," - said Grantz who was in terviewei along with Bass at the Roost. Bass countered, "Jeff is the hero type. He is more of a scrambler than I am. When I get trapped behind the line of scrimmage I just think about getting back to the line of scrimmage, but Grantz thinks about making a big gain out of it. Like the other night (against Georgia Tech) when he turned a broken play into a touchdown. He spotted (Mike) Farrell in the end zone whenmost people would have never seen him. I would have probably just wanted to get back to the line of scrimmage but he found Farrell on the backside for a touch down. Things like this come. with experience." Grantz has the pleasant problem of being a two-sport superstar, wh ile Bass is dedicated to just footbalL. "I like both football and baseball the same," said Grantz. "I guess it will depend on the better offer if I ever am drafted for both sports." Bass was member of his high school track team during the off season in Camp Springs, Md. His father was a very good college football player and even played a year in the pro ranks, "I know the only..chance I got in athletics is through football," said Bass. Both of the talented athletes seem to have much in common. Tiey claim to have very little of a social life. "How can anyone have a big social life in a place like Columbia," said Bass, jokingly. Both Grantz and Bass were recruited by nearly the same Palmetto AnSquare Electronic Slide * TRIGONOMETRIC * INVERSE T RIGONOMET RIC * LOGARITHMIC ASO. .. RO0CK WR rnploys id Bass schools. Grantz visited Penn State but decided against that football power because it "was just too big for me." Every ACC school and most of the Southeastern schools offered them scholarships. "Minnesota was the only Big Ten school that tried to recruit me," said Bass. The simple fact is that both came to USC because they thought they could play here. "When I was recruited, Dobby Grossman was the quarterback," said Bass. Grantz remarked that he told Notre Dame he was not interested when he received a letter from them in high school. Both athletes say they have tremendous respect for each other, and they act like best friends rooming together on the road and always talking to each other about football. " They make a lot of of com ments to each other on the sidelines," said Dietzel. "I think it is a tremendous advantage to have both of them. Frankly, if anything should ever happen to one of them you know that you have a seasoned player waiting to come in." Grantz would like the Gamecocks to go to a bowl. "I want us to go to a bowl, but you can't think too far ahead because I think we did that against Georgia Tech," he said. "You have to play one game at a time." Meanwhile, Bass thinks that an 8-3 season will be successful for the Gamecocks. At least it might get the Gamecocks invited to a bowl game. Many Gamecock fans hope he is right.
