LETTER! USC band Working hard TO THE EDITOR: You may say the football team lost the ballgame but they put their best effort. Likewise the band did a splended job. Since Georgia Tech's band didn't feel up to marching, we held up the halftime privledge. We have been working hard since before schoolstartedand had prepared a beautiful show. The football team gets pictures and two pages of how well they could have done and the the Carolina band gets absolutely nothing. We were there, yelling ourselves hearse and our time came and we did our stuff without fussing or groaning. I think the Carolina band should be given a big applause. Hats off to Carolina's Marching Pride. ALAN REESE Cooperation Needed TO THE EDITOR: In the Sept. S edition of The Gamecock, Eileen Berlin, SGA Secretary for Student Welfare, called the recent registration the "epitome of absurdity." Later in the same article, Dr. Nicholas P. Problej From Page One and caused the building's oc cupancy to be delayed by one year. Officals said they almost missed deadline again this year because of construction lags. Coble Construction Co., who built Bates West, went bankrupt in the process and a bonding company had to complete construction. The company changed hands several times and materials and labor problems contributed to the delay. University officials said the problems voiced by residents of Bates West would be solved soon. They said new funiture was on order and regular maintainance employes were repairing the building. USC Director of Housing, Robert A. Stewart, said the problems that the students complain about sometimes do not get reported to the right person, and that one of the problems with complaints in the Bates West area is the lack of s an area manager. Some students complained that the furniture that they got was not as attractive as the furniture in other apartments. Stewart said that two furniture companies supplied the couches and chairs for the living rooms. Williams Fur niture supplied the more attractive and sturdy mediterraniar. furniture while Thonet Furniture Company supplied the modern furniture. He said the mediterranian furniture was better for apartment housing. Despite all its problems the people at Bates West seem to be happy with the situation. They said the life at Bates West is no different than life in a dorm, it is just more -convenient. The students said they had had no problem with studying with people coming around bothering them. Registratio Mitchell, vice president for ad ministrative services, adamantly disagreed with Ms. Berlin, calling the process relatively smooth. Now in the Sept. 12 edition of The Gamecock, we have a further explanation and evaluation by Ms. Berlin. In a lengthy explanation, she has singled out the academic departments as the scapegoat for the "epitome of absurdity." Why has further light been shed on'this issue? I would hope it is not because Ms. Berlin is the graduate assistant to the same Dr. Mitchell who holds overall responsibility for the planning administering and supervision of the entire registration process. I'm sure there's no conflict of interest between Ms. Berlin's two positions. I also participate in registrations as both a student and a petty bureaucrat. I would adjust Ms. Berlin's "blame fixing" to several other locations and would say the worst problem is the lack of coordination in the administration of registration. First, at registration, we en counter the following groups: new freshman, continuing students, readmitted students, transfer students, former regional campus students and special students of many categories. Only the freshmen attending freshmen orientation and students ns engulf Student's complaint to the right The female residents asked said they were not afraid to live where a security gaurd is not presennt. Some expressed a little ap prehension at first, but said they feel perfectly at home in Bates West. The parents of all the students staying at Bates West were sent a registered letter last summer telling them that their daughter or son would be living in a coed dorm. Many students expressed anger a bout this policy because they felt it Budget hearings The student senate Finance Committee wil hold its budget hearings for the fall semester at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Room 308 at the Russell House. ODK problems Due to technical difficulties with our computer, the 1974-75 OI)K membership drive has been misdirected. ODK i a conars.hip inAd..ship 'n blues... The ser Campus Opinion eITh majors had the opportunity to pre-register. And one department head reported less than 50 percent of the pre-registered even picked up their course cards. Many sections currently have open seats due to this student practice. Can this be blamed on the depart ments? Secondly, a friend of mine asked an English professor why the freshman English sections were filled and the students kept coming. It seems English expected a certain number of entering fresh men. This total is supplied to them by the admissions office. Someone neglected to inform the English Department that 600 additional people ahad been accepted. Can this situation be balmed on a department? Thirdly, I saw where a spokesman for Educational Ser vices was interviewed by The lates West ; do not get reported person Robert A. Stewart infringed upon their rights. Bates West is not in fact a coed dorm. Women live on the top four floors the men on the bottom floors. The plans were originally to make access between the girls half and mens half of the building difficult because the bad connotations that coed dorm bring to mind to some people. However, by the time it was open, the brochure for the building read, "apartment living for the single student." Stewart said of the attitude of f'ews Briefi honor society, formed to bring together representative leaders of faculty and students in programs of benefit to the university corn munity. If you have above a 3.0 average and think you are interested see Tod Lede?en in the Office of Foreign Student Affairs; Pendleton Bldg. Bus service The University has instituted i shuttle bus system which runm daily from the Coliseum to the corner of Cege an Su te,, tate...USC's mar O l State. He said he expected about one half of the students to register on Thursday and one half on Friday. This would provide a even flow. Many students who were assigned a Friday registration time registered on Thursday. At the dean's station, we ran three lines all day Thursday; but on Friday we could utilize only one. This particularly explains why a student who retistered at his ap pointed time Friday found al his courses closed. Can this be blamed on the departments? In conclusion, while many departments which refused to cooperate with pre-registration or changed their master schedule excessively should be censured, blame should be reassessed as follows: Student's failing to pre-register and not registering as scheduled. dorm parents toward the responsiblity it has for the studEnts, "people think the university takes more responsibility than it does. They like to feel that the university is taking care of their son or daughter." As to whether USC will go the way of many schools in coed dormitories with males and females sharing the same bathrooms and having roommates of the opposite sex is hard to tell. Bates is a step in the right direction. Streets, also making a stop at the corner of Park and Devine. Buses depart from the Coliseum beginning at 7:30 a.m. and arEive, at the corner of College and Suriter five minutes later. The buses run' at 15 minute inte: vals from 7:30~ a.m. until 10 a.m. Bus departures going from College and Sumter'to the Coliseum will leave at 15 minute intervals beginning at i p.m. and continuing until 2:30 p.m. Services are discontinued from 2:30Otill 4 p.m. at which time they start again anrd run unti 5:15 p.m. ching band Admissions; for not keeping departments notified of additional numbers jof new students. Office of Educational Services; for a lack of administrarative cooperation. If a department is non cooperative, will the accusers please notify the academic dean under whom said department is nestled. I would refuse to blame a department which found out after pre-registering that some ad ministrative office had changed both the time and meeting place of a section seating 200 students. This one change can alter an entire master schedule and the depart ment foUnd out too late.Rather than recrimination, let us try to coordinate and cooperate. ED EWING Senators Working hard TO THE EDITOR: Regarding your editorial of Sept. 12 under the headline "Can the senate change," I cannot help but to abree with you about the trend toward triviality and flippancy you brought out. I also endorse the suggestion that members of the student body contact their senator and let them know how they feel about the important issues at hand, but I cannot allow this blanket in dictment of student government to go unchallenged. There are people in the senate and the cabinet who have, and still work long and hard in the intreset of their fellow students. Senator Russ Putnam, representing Woodland Terrace has been very active on their behalf and in veteran's affairs all summer long, not just while the senate was in session. Steve Hill, secretary of off-campus affairs, has worked long and hard to develop unity among off-campus types. Senator Jim Stuart, District 23, and Eileen Berlin and yes .eveni myself as well as Leigh Leventis have put in time and effort abouve and beyond that which we are required to do. One of the real concerns I have as a senator is why The Gamecock isn't doing a better job of keeping the student body in formed of what is going on in SGA and about the campus. The many days and weeks of work, by both the senate finance commitee and the senate were given only the briefest of comment in The Gamecock. The fact that the reinstatement of the A,B,C,D,E,F grading system was blocked by the efforts of Leigh Leventis and myself has never been mentioned, nor for that matter has the implication of this ever been mentioned in The Gamecock to the incoming students. Why can't The Gamecock take the time and make the efforts to do this? This will affect the entire future of so many students that to con sider this to be the Number One, most critical issue student government will face this year. Thank you for your valued support in the past, and look for ward to you joining in the fight with us on this ot'e. FIIANK SIIEALY.
