Malone's contract calls for a yearly salary of between $150,000 and $200,000, with the rest of the money coming from bonuses. In addition, he gets $30,000 for every college year he completes. While Driesell's arguments weremerely ridiculous, Kehoes were downright nauseating, reflecting almost everything college athletics are not supposed to represent. During Malone's negotiations with Utah, the New York Times reported: "Kehoe said Maryland had already sold 'every possible basketball ticket' at its Cole Fieldhouse and had negotiated several television contracts. The team was scheduled to leave in two weeks for a series of games in Mexico. " 'Everybody knows that much of the interest factor in us is primarily due to Malone, especially since we graduated Len Elmore and Tom McMillen,' said Kehoe. 'We are exploring legal recourse and I assure you that the university, and hopefully every Atlantic Coast Conference school will make those people unwelcome in any of our facilities in the future.' " In effect, Kehoe said Maryland's investment in Malone was so great it overrode any consideration as to whether it was in Malone's best interest to be playing at Maryland or collecting at least $150,000 a year from Utah. Malone's mother works at a supermarket putting the price on meat packages for $100 per week. That is hardly a lucrative occupation. .So when Malone, an only child, can get a $3 million contract now, why should he wait and possibly sign for less in a couple years? That basically is one of big-time college athletics' biggest faults. The school is often considered first, the individual next. But that's not the way it should be.
