Patterson is reportedly considering reverting back to the A,B,C,D, and F grading system with D's and F's counting in the computation .of students Grade Point Ratios (GPR's). Before half the student body panics in the sudden realization that they just might have to study to earn a degree here, it would be wise to take into consideration why this switch is being contemplated. The A,B,C and NC grading system literally makes a farce out of the GPR system. It is possible for a student to flunk out with a 4.0 GPR. Students taking five courses and passing three of them with B's while flunking the other two has a higher GPR standing than the student who passes all five courses with three B's and two C's. The student who passed all five courses deserves a higher rating than the student who only passed three of the five. Since many graduate schools require specific GPR's from students in order to be accepted, one has to wonder the worth of a high GPR from USC when it is compared with the GPR of a person appplying to that same graduate school from a school using the A,B,C,D, and F system. With so much emphasis in recent years to make students education a true learning experience, the evaluation and grading techniques seem to have been neglected. Crisis leai BY JOE LOGAN In this time of back-to-echool greetings, the Carolina student will increasingly find himself con fronted with a major crisis-whal to make of these revolutionary deveLpments on the handshake frontier. While the crisis confines itsell chiefly to males, it should not be taken lightly be females. After all, what good is a boyfriend who is downtrodden by a crisis? The crisis in question comes to us in the form of an alteration of that great American institution--the handshake. Imagine for a moment, you're strolling to class when suddenly you see an old buddy you haven't seen since last semt!ster. You smile; he smiles. You walk toward each other, eagerly offer your hand in greeting and suddendly &&! !$CRASH. What ensued was the muffled sound of human flesh smashing together in some con torted mesh that resembles a worm's nest. The problem-he was shaking "hip" and you were shaking "standard." Your mind whirls, "Oh, no, what happened? He was a "standard" before summer started. I've made a fool oi myself." He glares at you, gloating over the fact that he has crossed over into "hipdom" while you are still a mere "standard." In a single handshake you have completely revealed your political leanings. persional philosophy and love 01 tradition. He seemed to be saying, "FreE love, torture Nixon and free thE Jackson Five." You seemed to be saying, "Get the boys back irl Vietnam, I read the Wall Stree Journal and Nixon is an honest man." How could you have left yourself open for such humilation? Why didn't he tell you he was hip? A re tem needs Bill C Gamecock Another problem in this area which deserves serious con sideration is the grading systems used by each teacher. Some teachers require students to do an enormous amount of work just make a C, while others may give a person an A just for having the courtesy not to fall asleep during. the lectures. A student may ac tually work harder to make a C from one professor than he does to make an A from another. Many students spend more time looking over a schedule trying to find a "crip" course or a "crip" professor than they do applying themselves to that -subject the entire year. The instructors are just as much at fault for this as many not only tolerate it, they encourage it. This is academic excellence? A student's interest in his subject matter has a direct bearing on his grade performance in that class and students should not be made to suffer overall for doing poorly in one or two classes. Students who flunk out under this system literally have to make a 4.0 upon their return to school just to "raise" their GPR to the 2.0 ies campus you the only one on camnus who still shakes "standard?", Why youI Why you? How will you ever show your face at another beer bust? Of course, many people are free of the handshake crisis, their friends being unmistakedly on one side of the handshake issue. In a single glance, one can tell if they are a "standard" or a "hip." It is those people who have friends in both the "hip" and the "standard" world that the crisis affects most devastatingly. These poor souls must approach friends all the time knowing that a hand shake will follow and that it may very well leave them marked for life. There has never been a period so turbulent or critical on the hand shake scene. Our entire culture, constitution and freedom is threatened. How can Kissinger carry on meaningful foreign negotiations abroad when the citizenry back home cannot even shake hands. Will everyone turn to the "hip" shake or will we continue in this ridof uncertainty. Address: Campus oluiasni 2920n. study utlaw Columnist needed to graduate. A student flunking out once should not be made to suffer for his previous failures. . The system does allow a student to "retake" a course he failed and, should he receive a better grade than before, he could replace the new grade for the old one in the computation of his GPR. This still places a vast amount of pressure on a student who is returning to school after having flunked out. What is the. fairest and most equitable way to handle GPR's? Perhaps a compromise of the two systems if in order here. Instead of completely switching back to the old system, what about ap plying the old system to a students GPR only in courses in his major. This would eliminate the $tudents argument that he should not be penalized for making a bad grade in a subject he cares nothing about and would not put an undue amount of prefsure on students. While a system of this nature would admittedly cause more red tape in a computerized university system already over flowing with it, it does at least appear to be a fair system. That is what we are looking for here, isn't it? shaking barr#ssiff would it be to respectfduy slap a "standard" on your grandfather just as he is about to offer to sell you some pot? In days gone by there were only two dreaded handshakes--the "limp fish" and the "crusher." Now we must deal with the limp fish, the crusher, the hip, the standard and sometimes even a double ( a tricky maneuver in volving an introductory "stan dard" and then swiftly switching to a "hip." People using the double not only confuse you as to their political leanings but are obviously in the midst of a trying identity crisis. Fortunately, the end to the handshake crisis is in sight because there are solutions. The Gamecock has those solutions. 1. Do not leave your room. 2. On the threshold of a shake, announce yourself by shouting either "hip" or "standard." 3. Wear a complete upper-body cast. 4. Spit at approaching -pedestrians. ers from readers.
