'Road ap The Golden Spur Nite Club opened its summer concert series this past Thursday night in ex cellent fashion when it premiered the rock band "Roadapple" from Atlanta. "Roadapple" consists of five members, with two playing keyboards. This, in essence, is the I backbone of the group. The two keyboard men give the group a distinctive sound that places them above the heading of just another average band. The instrumentation of "Roadapple" was superb. The organist and the lead guitarist made quite a team. However, one I cannot overlook any member's playing ability as all sounded well together. The use of mellotron, minimoog, and electric piano enhanced their sound tremendously. It more than made up for their poor vocal. You never cared if they sang as long as they played like a tight band should. The stage set-up for the band covered almost the entire dance I floor of the Spur. It was very impressive in appearance which made one anxious to hear the "Roadapple's" music. Team members, Bob Gerwig, < Tom Leslie, Kathy Hughes, Linda Horlacher, and Jim Martin, defeated a field of 12 competing college teams in a runoff held on the first of the month, with their advertising campaign and case study of the American Motors Corporation. The contest, based on a real case history of American Motors and devised by their advertising agency, Cunningham and Walsh, Inc., was based on five judging categories in the areas of Research Foundation, Advertising and Sales Promotion Plans, Media Strategy and Budget Allocations, Creative Strategy and Agency Presentation. Each category was alloted a number of scoring points, ranging from 15 points for Agency Presentation, to 30 points for Creative Strategy. The USC team first had to compete in the Southeastern Regionals before advancing to the National Finals in Washington D.C. There they defeated runner up Michigan State as well as ten other colleges including the University of Minnesota, University of Rhode Island , and University of Missouri. Team members of USC and runner-up Michigan State, will be awarded individual trophies, as well as plaques, with the names of the winning students and faculty advisors inscribed. Even so, most of he audience did not seem listurbed over it. When "Roadapple" finally >egan its first set, the Spur was airly well fille d up. They opened with a Todd Rundgren song and ;howed the bands excellent )lending of instruments. From my osition, the whole first set's music ;eemed to flow gracefully from one ;ide of the stage to the other. The band played three sets that night and ended the c6ncert at 11:30 p.m. "Roadapple" played mostly other musicians' material. 'heir own material was not that mpressive. Their rendition of ongs by such artists as Cat tevens, Manford Mann, Paul VIcCartney and Argent was very well done, however. Without a doubt, the highlight of he evening was "Roadapple's" erformance of "The Beatles" medley from 1963 to 1967.
