Published by the USC College of Education in this month's "Education Report," the report was written by USC doctor*al candidate Walter L. Procko based on a study conducted by University student Roger G. Gaddis for his Ph.D. dissertation. Procko notes, for example, that in South Carolina there is a presumption that officials can search school lockers without obtaining warrants. However, a student's person cannot be sear ched without a warrant unless he is deemed to be an immediate danger to himself or others. Most school districts in the state, according to Procko, have no district-wide dress codes for high school pupils. Concerning married or pregnant students, Procko says a recent South Carolina court decision indicates school authorities cannot expel a student merely because he is married. There are some in dications, he said, that school officials may prohibit married or pregnant pupils from participation in extracurricular activities.
