A report entitled "What, If

Published by the USC College of

was written by USC doctor*al

1973 law enacted by the state
legislature to sum up the rights of
school officials versus the rights of
students.
Procko notes, for example, that
in South Carolina there is a
presumption that officials can
search school lockers without
obtaining warrants. However, a
student's person cannot be sear

Concerning married or pregnant
students, Procko says a recent
South Carolina court decision
indicates school authorities cannot
expel a student merely because he
is married. There are some in
dications, he said, that school
officials may prohibit married or
pregnant pupils from participation
in extracurricular activities.
Corporal punishment, the study
points out, can be administered
legally to all public-school children
in South Carolina unless a local
school board specifically prohibits
its use.
