Creighi Hot Shooti Regular Se BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor OMAHA--Carolina warmed up for Saturday's match-up with Furman by outshooting one of the best percentage shooting op ponents it faced this season when they defeated Creighton, 78-69, at Omaha Civic Arena Monday night before a record crowd of 10,216. Carolina's locker room resembled that of a pennant winning baseball club after the road victory over the Bluejays, who went into the game ranked in the same position as USC in the UPI rankings--16th. Team Captain Brian Winters scored a game-high 29 points in the contest, his career-high scoring mark. "Twenty-two and four is a great record," said Winters. "This keeps our momentum going for next Saturday," said Winters, looking ahead for the first time, "But, for tonight we wanted that 22nd win and we did it. Also, we wanted to have a better record than last year's team and we did that." "No doubt about it it's a big boost for us," said Center Bob Mathias, "Either way this game went, we would have been ready for Saturday, but its nice to know you can win on the road." USC displayed difficulty on the road earlier this year, losing three games and barely slipping by relatively weak Villanova and Georgia Tech teams. "We were a younger team earlier this year," Mathias said. "Now we are jelling as a team, but then Nate (Davis), Dutch (Mark Griener) 'and I hadn't played together' very much. "I don't know if a win like this gives us momentum, as such, or if it just lets us know we can do the job," Mathias said. USC did the job in impressive fashion in defeating Creighton. Carolina, paced by Davis' nine of ten shooting performance, sank an incredible 57 per cent of its shots for the game. Creighton hit 53 per cent. Winters hit 13 of 22 shots, while Forward Alex English converted six of 11. Displaying consistency, Carolina shot 57 per cent in both halves. Carolina broke an 18-18 tie on Winter's 25-foot jumper at 9:45 in the first half, and sprinted to a ten point, 38-28 halftime lead. Bluejay Coach Eddie Sutton walked into the Carolina lockeroom following the game and told the Carolina team that they were one of the finest teams he has ever seen play. Sutton's respect for the Gamecocks was obviously felt by the Carolina team itself. Davis reflected the attitude with an optimistic prediction, "We're going to go a long way."
