With Automatic Light S( Carolina Li Last month a science fiction gadget of the sixties became a working reality at the University of South Carolina. McKissick Me'norial Library is putting into operation the only light scanning device in the nation to check out a book with the flick of the wrist. The scanners, according to Directory of Libraries Kenneth E. Toomb,, are connected to a mimi-computor and record the shaded code number of a book in the computer. Each student has a library code on the back of his identification card which is recorded in the computer after the book code. Thus with two sweeps of the light scanner a book that is being checked out and its borrower are recorded in the USC computer which further takes care of such details! as overdue statements and statistics as to how many books are checked out at one time and Antiserum .
