Recrul 1 While the Carolina basketball fr team is well on the way to winning c( 20 games for the sixth straight p1 season, Coach Paul Dietzel and his C staff are planning Carolina's 2, football future. G The coaches have signed 23 G players to football grants-in-aid c4 and have only seven more to sign 6, under the new NCAA regulations bi limiting the number of signees to li 30. "More people are after the top F athletes and a lot of average athletes will now be overlooked," a Dietzel said of the new regulations. w li "The average athlete is on hold. 11 We are not going all out to get C him." h Since an abundance of offensive backfield stars are returning from last season's 7-4 team, the em phasis is being placed on lineman and linebackers. Fifteen of the 23 players signed are linebackers and linemen, and the seven remaining grants-in-aid are expected to go to linemen. One of the top signees is Judge Porter, a 6-1, 240 lb. lineman from Fort Worth, Tex. Porter is a transfer from Garden City Com munity College in Kansas, where he was named to the Jayhawk Junior College Conference all conference team, and will be a candidate for an offensive line spot. Three linemen were signed from New York--Gary Tyra, a 6-1, 212, end and linebacker from Elmira; Scott Peterson a 6-4, 220, lineman We Hi DENIM BEIL JACKET NAVY BE Stripes PEA-NU I BRUSI l* ARMY FA'l *BYFATI ARMY-] T6 ASEME ting )ietzel PIE om Elmira, who was all )nference at the high school that -oduced Gamecock star Dana arpenter; and John Cameron, a 6 215, tight end and tackle from reenlawn. Carolina recruiters, as do most, start looking at prospects in their junior year in high school. "We make a lot of decisions on boys in their junior year," Dietzel said. "We can't do a thorough job on seniors." The coaches spend as much as six hours a day watching films of prospects. "The first thing we do is look at a player on film." Dietzel said, "Then we talk to his coach about his attitude. Then we see what his grades are. If his grades are below average, he had better Winter's had 5,072 votes in the last balloting release. Woolbright is the brother of Gamecock star Marty Woolbright. "The second thing we try to sell is the people, Dietzel said. "People are who you deal with. When we have prospects visit, they're im pressed with the people at Carolina." Many of the prospects are also impressed with the facilities at Carolina, which Dietzel said are one of the finest in the country.
