By STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Carolina countered a Penn comeback attempt midway in the second half by changing defenses to gain a 67-57 win over the Quakers Saturday night at the Coliseum. Penn held the lead only once during the entire game, but that 43-42 lead occurred when only 11:36 remained in the contest. Carolina scored the next seven points and the Quakers never again pulled closer than four points. Whitey Varga's 18-foot jumper gave Penn that short lived lead. Varga also hit the Quaker's previous basket, a 17-footer, and that shot may have proved to be the eventual downfall of the Quakers. Because when Varga's jumper fell through, Carolina shifted from a zone defense to man -to-man, and Penn was unable to compete with the pressure of USC's widson Lc .Davidson Head Coach Terry Holland felt his team's bench was more experienced also and played i big part in the game. "We controlled the tempo ;taying our offense against their one, said Holland, "and forced hem to play-man-to man defense and South Carolina doesn't have nuch depth." Holland said Mike Sorrentino's 7 30 [A ia Ha tI man-to-man. "I told our team that if they came within two points, we'd go to the man-to-man. They came within one so we went to it immediately ," Coach Frank McGuire said. "We got as much time out of the zone as we could." Varga's 18-footer followed the shift in defenses but from that point Penn's offense was ef fectively stifled by the Gamecock defense. "Their switching to a man-to-man was no surprise," said Penn Coach Chuck Daly. "We felt they always play an aggressive man-to-man. It did disrupt us a bit and that was enough to give them an edge." Bob Mathias gave USC the lead for good with a layup at 11:10. Mike Dunleavy followed with a layup and a free throw and Tommy Cox added a jumper before Penn could score again. During the crucial period in which USC shifted its defenses, Penn's offensive attack was severely weakened when 6-8 center Ron Haigler drew his fourth foul and retired to the bench. Without their biggest scoring threat and lacking their big iss Will HE defense on Brian Winters was one of the keys to his team's win. Winters scored only nine points in a dismal shooting performance while being hounded by his former team matefron Arc6b'snop'Malloy High School on l~ong liland. The Penn backcourt had carried the Quakers throughout much of the game, but they were unable to guide Penn suc cessfully during the final. minutes. Varga scored 12 points during the game, but only two came during the final ten minutes. Penn's other guard, Bill Finger, was the leading Quaker scorer with 14 points. Finger also scored but a single field goal during the final ten minutes. Scouting reports had in formed the Carolina team that their main worries should be with the Quaker frontcourt, but USC's big men experienced little dif ficulty in handling Penn's bigger frontcourt. Mathias hauled down 14 rebounds to lead everyone, and Mark Greiner's total of 11 was the games next highest. Alex English's eight equaled the Quaker's leaders, Henry Johnson and John Engles. Haigler finished with only six rebounds. Winters led all scorers with 18 points. Mathias hit 15 and Dunleavy scored 14 points. English and Tommy Cox each added nine. Ip Later they wouldn't let us," said McGuire, "English had someone on his back all the time and he was double-teamed when he had the ball." "They have a more experienced ball club and are very physical," said McGuire, " But Bobby Mathias was sensational in the second half. His brute strength paid off."
