By STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Carolina countered a Penn comeback attempt midway in the second half by changing defenses to gain a 67-57 win over the Quakers Saturday night at the Coliseum. Penn held the lead only once during the entire game, but that 43-42 lead occurred when only 11:36 remained in the contest. Carolina scored the next seven points and the Quakers never again pulled closer than four points. Whitey Varga's 18-foot jumper gave Penn that short lived lead. Varga also hit the Quaker's previous basket, a 17-footer, and that shot may have proved to be the eventual downfall of the Quakers. Because when Varga's jumper fell through, Carolina shifted from a zone defense to man -to-man, and Penn was unable to compete with the pressure of USC's widson Lc .Davidson Head Coach Terry Holland felt his team's bench was more experienced also and played i big part in the game. "We controlled the tempo ;taying our offense against their one, said Holland, "and forced hem to play-man-to man defense and South Carolina doesn't have nuch depth."
