"I never agreed with the rule to allow freshmen to play on the - varsity, even though we profited from it last year," said McGuire. "Most of the schools have found it unprofitable to operate a freshman team since the NCAA passed the rule." "It does a lot of damage in recruiting," claimed McGuire. "A lot of coaches tell their recruits they will play right off, and this brings about plAyer conflicts in the long run. I have never promised a player a starting position." McGuire said that between 10 and 12 players will comprise USC's Whe yoi a01 al ive Fros traveling squad. He also said that all the scholarship players will practice together and dress out as a complete team for home games. "The question is : How do you keep them happy?" McGuire's assistant, Donnie Walsh, coached the freshman teams of other years and he offered some background information on the pros and cons of having a fresh man team even though the NCAA rule permits freshman to play varsity sports. "We really would like to have a jayvee team and if we find a way not to hurt the players we will have one. Basketball is more personal because it involves few players. McGuire wants to keep them happy but the new rule could create problems for one of college's most successful coaches. ZOTC ace ce nal 100.
