Gran gamec Grantz( To Get/ BY JIM HERSH Asst. Sports Editor If Jeff Grantz was the Sports Illustrated Back of the Week and on the UPI Backfield of the Week for running for 102 yards and passing for 79 more against Georgia Tech, he should be getting awards all this week for his offensive show against Ohio University Saturday night. In addition to breaking the school. rushing record by gaining 260 yards on the ground, Grantz ran back a kickoff 85 yards to putCarolina in the lead early in the third quarter. And Ohio's defense spent most of the rest of the game chasing him, usually without success. Grantz ran for 84 yards on 13 carries in the first half when USC had a hard time scoring on Ohio's defense. "I don't think we were up for the game," offensive guard Jerry Witherspoon, who helped open the Ohio defense for Grantz' runs, said. "It's hard to get up for every game. "Grantz' long kickoff return really started the momentum for us," Witherspoon said. Offensive tackle Junior Cash said he thought the Gamecocks moved the ball well in the first half, too. "We only had the ball five times and we scored twice," Cash said. "We made a few adjustments at the beginning of the game and didn't have much trouble after that. "Jeff has got to read the defense and go from there," Cash said. "When he reads it well the plays work. Tonight he did everything." Grantz ran for 176 yards in the second half alone to break open a tight game and give the Gamecocks the win in front of a sparse Homecoming crowd of 39,021. The 260 rushing yards eclipsed Steve Wadiak's 256-yard per formance against Clemson in 1950. Grantz' heroics started when he returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown early in the second half after Ohio had taken a 14-10 lead. Grantz ran for two other touch downs in the second half, one from 35 yards out and another from five yards. In the first half, which ended with the Gamecocks leading 10-7, the ball seemed to be hard to handle as the Gamecocks fumbled four times but lost the ball only once. Ohio took advantage of a second half USC fumble on the first play from scrimmage by halfback Randy Chastain. After Chastain fumbled on the USC 33, Ohio tailback Dave Houseton-who had 108 yards in the game-ran three times, the final one for 16 yards and a touchdown to give Ohio a 14-10 lead. However, Grantz' kickoff return got USC back in the lead to stay. Grantz made quite a few long runs from scrimmage, the longest being 45 yards in the third quarter. "They had their ends keyed on the pitch man, the tackles on the dive play and the linebackers on me," Grantz said after the game. Grantz passed only four times, completing one for 25 yards. "The offensive line did a super job blocking with second and third efforts downfield," Grantz said. "And the defense did a good job giving us great field position throughout the game."
