Hodgin Past WE BV STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Jay Lynn Hodgin pumped some life into an otherwise lackluster USC offensive attack and led the Gamecocks past an inept Wake Forest team 28-12 Saturday night at the Deacon's Groves Stadium. Hodgin staged an offensive performance that rivaled USC quarterback Jeff Grantz in the season opening win over Georgia Tech. Hodgin's per formance had to place him among the nominees for the national awards that Grantz won after the Georgia Tech contest. Hodgin gained 143 yards on just 19 carries, the highest rushing total of any Gamecock back in quite some time. But Hodgin's chief contribution to the Game cock offense came from his passing, with the junior halfback com pleting three passes in as many attempts for 643 yards and two touchdowns. If not for Hodgin, USC would have been upstaged by Wake's woefully weak offense. The Demon Deacon offense outgained Carolina for the game while scoring a 0 eh Scr m e e eF 0 tapered wvith no * . When Wake scored that touch down it brought the home crowd to its feet in celebration, a celebration that had to indicate to the Gamecocks the ineptitude of the Deacon offense. But, remarkably, the Wake score gave the Deacons a chance to pull within a single touchdown of USC after the fourth quarter was half over. However, an unsuccessful two-point conversion pass attempt from quarterback Andy Carlton to halfback Clayton Heath kept the upset-minded Deacons from becoming too oDtimistic. In the first half Wake's offense overshadowed Carolina's with Heath running easily through the USC defense for substantial gains. Heath led all rushers at the end of the first half with 75 yards, and Carlton, not noted for his passing, hit six of eight in the first half. Although the Wake offense stood out in the first half. the Deacons showed that they were unaccustomed to leading anything and trailed USC 7-6 at the half.
