Recently, at halftime of the pro football exhibition game between Minnesota and Kansas City, rugby received national coverage when two American rugby teams competed during the break. The announcers showed possibly the most excitement of the night as they described the action. Five times during the ten minutes of action the football fans went to their feet to cheer great rugby plays. Rugby in Carolina by no means takes a second fiddle to the style of rugby that was shown on national television. Under the direction of Dr. James Wynn, rugby started moving into prominence at Carolina four years ago. Wynn can claim to his credit trips to the National Collegiate Rugby Tournament in the past two years and exceellent rankings in this part of the coutry and the nation. This week Nobles believes the Cougars will rely on a running game but will pass at will."Of course we respect the secondary," Nobles said. "We know that if they intercept it could mean a touch down because of their speed." Nobles said that he had heard much about Coach Paul ~~3ietzel, who appeared on the cover of a Texas weekly football publication. "I hear he has a way of getting his players mentally ready for a game," he said. "South Carolina seems to be very enthusiastic," Nobles continued. "I know that it will be a good game." Coincidently, the Gamecocks run the "Houston Veer." Nobles feels that Carolina's only weakness may be their inexperience at the offense. Houston's Yeoman per fected the attack in 1966 when Houston shocked the football world with a 100-6 victory over Tulsa. Nobles said Houston returned 11 players on defense this year. "Several of our defensive players have received post season honors," commented the flashy quarterback. Nobles summed up Carolina's gridders with these words, "The players are very fast and the secondary will intercept the ball if you put it anywhere near them. They come up quick on the flow and handle the corners well. I noticed on our charts they are not very heavy so I figured they were very quick before I even talked to my coaches. " There could be no better place to play the game than the Astrodome," says Nobles. Houston made few mistakes against Rice and Carolina played a near flawless game against Georgia Tech.
