In what appears to be an iuspicious year for Coach Paul Dietzel's eighth USC campaign, here are several good reasons for bis attitude, among them being he opening game trouncing of iationally-rankaed Georgia Tech and the explosive new veer offense. But the center of attention is the fine sophmore quarterback, Jefi Grantz. Grantz, who stars in baseball as well as on the gridiron, is n< stranger to the veer. He led Bel Air, Md. High School to an overall record of 16-2-1 in his juniorandse ior years while directing this in creasingly popular attack. Indoing so, he was selected t< the All-Metropolitan tean1 Baltimore twice, All-County twice and All-State in his senior year. In describing the Veer in elation to the similar and more amous wishbone-T, Grantz .plains, ''It (the veer) is both a louble and triple-option offense. t's basically the same as the wish 4one, only the veer has split backs nd one more wide receiver, which allows for more passing." Grantb refused scholarship of ers from 20 other schools to pick larolina. He also hit on es for 79 yards and two Focus >tball he recommended Carolina," he said. "I respected Coach Dietzel as a man and as a coach; he has established himself as a coach. Also, I wanted to come South because of the weather and I wanted to play baseball." In describing the improvement of USC over last year's team, he praised the entire team. "Both the offensive line and backs are tremendous," Grantz said. "I can't say enotgh about the line. The backs are doIng a super job, too. The team has great en thusiasum. We're working hard and the veer makes a pretty big difference. "I consider the TIech game a real team victory," Grantz said. ni "Everybody gave 100 per cent." Grantz called most of the plays 1against the Yellow Jackets. Oc casional ly a play was sent in from Dietzel and he also conferred some times with offensive coor dinator Bob Gatling in the press box. Despite being the UPI quar terback of the week, Grantz does not feel that he has his position lockhed -tq. "No one has really won a position, it all depends on each game performance," he declared. Referring specifically to himself, Grantb said, "I will just go out and do my best." As his performance against Georgia 'lech revealed, his best can help make Carolina a winmer this fall
