Soccer T he USC Soccer Club begins practice for its 1973 season at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 25th on the soccer field at the corner of Wheat and Sumter streets. Dick Fernald club coach is depending on receiving help from freshmen to add depth to his team. N ine starters are returning from. last year's club which compiled a six and three record. Fernald said, "No positions are established and freshmen should try out." USC faces the stif-fest competition in its history this season with a sixteen game schedule which includes scr immage games with nationally ranked Clemson and Erskine. The season opener will be scrimmage game at Clemson on Sept. 9 before journeying to Jacksonville, Fla. for games with Stetson and Jacksonville on Sept. 15and 16. The first home game will be on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. against Appalachian State University. . FOOTGEAR e GENERAl :ields A new soccer field is being built to replace the present field behind the- Blossom Street garage, Harold Brunton, vice-president of business aftairs, said. "Since they have started enlarg ing the garage," Brunton said, "we will have to use the current field for park ing. Work has been accelerated on the field between Whaley and Heyward (the street the Roost is on) Streets for the new field." Brunton said that in building the field, they "tried to implement as many money-saving moves as possible. We took the first out of the library construction hole and moved it the short distance to the new field, which needed it, rather than hauling it further and just dumping it."
