Last Basq Sophomore righthander Greg Ward's "iron man" feat of pitching both ends of a doubleheader against powerful Georgia Tech climaxed South Carolina baseball last season. A season in which the Gamecocks virtually rewrote the record book. Ward, who finished with a 7-3 record, pitched a three-hitter in the first seven inning game, setting down the Yellow Jackets 11-3. He retired the final 19 batters in a row to hand Georgia Tech its first loss since April 2 and break a 13 game win streak. Coach Bobby R ichardson decided to let Ward start the second game because the Greensboro, N.C., sophomore "was strong, his curve and slider were breaking beautifully, and I thought he could go a couple of more innings."
