Winn Predic BY LARRY EDMOND Anti-Dietzel mongers will probably be heart-broken this p season as the eight-year veteran football coach pulls in the long-awaited winning season. There is'e'strange buzzing in the air as through everyone senses that this is the Gamecocks' year. Season tickets to 1973 football games have topped 20,000 sales. With nearly two weeks remaining before the September 15 season opener with Georgia Tech in Williams-Brice Stadium, University officials expect to approach 25,000 season tickets. Tickets are still available for the six other home games, although large crowds as expected for what promises to be the toughest games on the schedule-LSU, Georgia Tech, and N.C. State. Tickets for these contests are swiftly becoming scarce. The Gamecocks really face a tough schedule this season. But with the talent and the number of veterans, Dietzel should accrue at least a 7-4 season. In addition to 38 returnees 17 starters, USC's new weapori will be the Veer type offense. KM~h~I WintersC( Basketbo BY LARRY EDMOND SPORTS EDITOR Gamecock basketball with Frank McGuire at the helm is always invigorating and exciting. McGuire who boasts a 430-165 in 23 collegiate seasons will be seeking his sixth straight 20 win season and fourth consecutive post-season tournament berth, this year. With the aid of two freshman starters and All-America Kevin Joyce the Gamecocks posted a 22-7 record and an NCAA playoff bid in 1972-73. However Joyce, 6-3, USC's fifth leading scorer with 1,400 points, and seven-foot center Danny Traylor must be replaced as well as sixth man Casey Manning. :Jptain Of I Team . Brian Winters, 6-4 swing man who averaged 11.5 points as a junior, will be the '73-'74 captain and the only senior other than 6-5 R ick Mousa who spent most of last season on the bench with injuries and scored only 27 points in 11 games. Other than Winters, the top returnee is 6-8 Alex English who started all 29 games as a freshman, averaging 14.6 points and 10.6 rebounds. A native Columbian, English was named to three all-tournament teams in the Utah Classic, Holiday Festival, and the NCAA Midwest regional. A slim and graceful athlete who may well be McGuire's next All-America. The other freshman starter last (ear was 6-2 guard Mike Dunleavy i tough little New York Irishman vho shot .517 from the floor and 819 from the foul line, turned in P3 assists, and averaged 10.4 points er game despite an assortment of oot injuries and ' broken teeth iuring the course of the season.
