Henry Caldwell, Columbia High ace, sank a one-and-one with one second left to the add the finishing touches. Caldwell was chosen as Most Valuable Player because of his sup erior performance. He was high scorer with 21 points and the man who ignited the North and spurred them to a rally from a 12-point de ficit. Both teams played laboriously during the first half. Behind Will Bynum's 12 points and Chris White's 11, the southerners moved to a 45-33 halftime lead over the faltering North. At the half Davis and Irmo's Wilbur Corley were the top scorers with seven points each for the upper-staters. Bynum, a former Sumter High School standout got things going for his team as he chalked up the first three baskets. He finished wtih 16 points for the night. He also chipped in a big bucket which put the South team ahead 75-74 with 50 seconds left in the contest. Bynum tackled his man-sized as signment of handling Nat Davis with alacrity and held the taller North cager effectively. He was in strumental on the defensive boards in the first half as he fought off the opposition to get key rebounds which kept the running offense of the South alive. After five and a half mini of the second half, the South was chopped to 51-49, when C well dropped a bucket and D followed with three straight bi ets. Nate Davis who was the dicted favorite for the most vali le player honors played a solid fensive game despite a lag on hi ual offense. He controlled thE fensive board and blocked se\ shots. Both Coaches mentioned s( al turning points. Jerry Wa South coach, pointed to a mi layup with 1:35 remaining an( team ahead by a point. He also: led out a pair of missed free thr Reggie Christopher, N coach, called intermission a tur point when he told his players were being out hustled. He named a scoring spurt that gav team the lead.
