Our OWN
(eys 'North
BY LARRY EDMOND
Sports Editor
With 28 seconds left to play in
the game Devinity Mickel capped a
spurrious North rally with a tipped
field goal that ultimately proved to
be the undoing of the South cagers
as North edged South 78-75 in the
annual South Carolina Coaches As
sociation All-Star basketball game
Tuesday night at Carolina Colise
um.
Henry Caldwell, Columbia High
ace, sank a one-and-one with one
second left to the add the finishing
touches.
Caldwell was chosen as Most
Valuable Player because of his sup
erior performance. He was high
scorer with 21 points and the man
who ignited the North and spurred
them to a rally from a 12-point de
ficit.
Both teams played laboriously
during the first half. Behind Will
Bynum's 12 points and Chris
White's 11, the southerners moved
to a 45-33 halftime lead over the
faltering North. At the half Davis
and Irmo's Wilbur Corley were the
top scorers with seven points each
for the upper-staters.
Bynum, a former Sumter High
School standout got things going
for his team as he chalked up the
first three baskets. He finished wtih
16 points for the night. He also
chipped in a big bucket which put
the South team ahead 75-74 with
50 seconds left in the contest.
Bynum tackled his man-sized as
signment of handling Nat Davis
with alacrity and held the taller
North cager effectively. He was in
strumental on the defensive boards
in the first half as he fought off the
opposition to get key rebounds
which kept the running offense of
the South alive.

All-Star
The North never really got g(
until the 2nd half when HE
Caldwell and Nate Davis combi
to get the North back on the r
track. After five and a half mini
of the second half, the South
was chopped to 51-49, when C
well dropped a bucket and D
followed with three straight bi
ets.
Nate Davis who was the
dicted favorite for the most vali
le player honors played a solid
fensive game despite a lag on hi
ual offense. He controlled thE
fensive board and blocked se\
shots.
Both Coaches mentioned s(
al turning points. Jerry Wa
South coach, pointed to a mi
layup with 1:35 remaining an(
team ahead by a point. He also:
led out a pair of missed free thr
Reggie Christopher, N
coach, called intermission a tur
point when he told his players
were being out hustled. He
named a scoring spurt that gav
team the lead.
