T US IN PE RSON' Osmo n BY BOB CRAFT The Osmonds The Plan MGM-SE 4902 The only thing I can figure is that someone slipped some mescaline in Donny Osmond's milkshake while he was at a Jesus Freak convention. No, that's too flip. The man who talked to me on the phone asked me if the paper would review a new record from MGM. I said sure, send it on. Then it seemed he lowered his voice a trace when he said it was by the Osmonds. He quickly added that it was a departure for -them and that the company wanted some college reaction on it. That seems fair enough. College campuses are not exactly die-hard strongholds for the Osmonds, although there have been some rumors of Osmond posters in various Tri-Delt houses across the country. And who can ever forget the UPI report of "Double Lovin"' being played on the stereo when FBI men rushed a Weatherman bomb factory in Boulder, Colorado? See, there I've blown it again. It's really too easy to make fun of the Osmonds and not take them seriously, as if they ever asked us to take them seriously. Here the temptation to parallel the E Osmonds with The Beatles r becomes great, but at the risk of E blasphemy I shall demur from that. 1 The album itself is a concept album that is similar to something I from the past, say 1969 or S thereabouts. The man in the album I is contemplating the relationship 5 of himself to God. It ends happily ( ( shall break the suspense). The I man journeys through confusion r "Got traffic in my mind/Don't ( know which road to follow" after the first cut that is entitled "War in Heaven," AND DOUBT "It coul 1 end tomorrow/And where would I S be/Does life go on/Or will it be the I end of me? Are you up there. ../Do t you really care/Are you up there?" through prophetic certainty "Now I just look around/If that'S WHAT V\ s just look around/If that's what we I see/I t's gotta be the last days" and c finally peace "Going home/if it I takes me the rest of my life." While this sounds like something like the Moody Blues might pull, don't be deceived. The poetry of the songs at no point C appraoches the majesty of the Moodies. In fact some of it is C downright silly. "Why did you do t it/You should not make your r mother cry/I'd say you blew it." i" The Osmonds have learned their c lessons well. And as it is easy to see,t they have not forgotten the ti transistorized loins from which 9 they sprung and holding fast to the. credo "Don' mess wif success," s they have thrown a monkey ' wrench into their own album. c Several af the songs on this si album were written just perfectly A for Top 40 play. Such songs as "Let C Me In" and "Darlin'" already smack of gold 45s for the Osmond e treasure room. In the album, t however, they are not meant to be c teeny-bopper love ballads but ti meant to talk about love of man for tI God, this is especially clear in "Let Me In" where the man screams at God to take him in. It will eep the Osmonds on the air and n the cover of 16 Magazine, their reads cut out and fitted on cartoon odies, with the legend "Donny arrowly escapes death at the ands of kidnappers" or some ther such drivel plastered above it. But to be fair, the album is not ompletely a waste. No, not at all. ~here are portions of THE PLAN hat sound very favorably like cuts rom JESUS CHRIST. oUPERSTAR and 666, a rock oncept album based on the Book if Revelation by a European group alled "Aphrodite's Child." One ut even sounds like "Magical lystery Tour" vintage Beatles. While there are those concept ilbums that work, like those nentioned above (Let's not get in n argument over "Mystery Tour") here are also those that don't. 'The Beat Goes On" by Vanilla :udge, "Ark 2" by Flaming Youth, ad to admit because it's one of my avorite albums "A Tramp hining" by Richard Harris and ven "In the Court of The Crimson Cing" by King Crimson. (Now eally does anyone play anything >ff that album except the title cut? lands please. I thought not.) While there is some nobility in his album, the Osmonds can also ink to the depths also. On "Let Me n" they prove that they can do a iang-up Vogues imitation. They also are a little too ightweight at this point to peculate on the fall of the Empire. mean can you not sit back and rack up when the cut "The Last )ays" comes on and societal legeneration is symbolized by an )smond giving out with an >rgasmic grunt? (Okay you cynics, top saying that that is a really lood symbol) I f this seems hard on the )smonds, realize that I am judging hem by standards that they have ever been judged by before. This new territory to them and the inly real trouble seems to be if the oys are going to forge ahead irough the much or if they run utless. I say, Osmonds, pick up those vnthesizers and carve out a attlement and give yourself a uple of years. Because, if you :ay where you are, the future is 'hat is happening to David assidy: Oblivion.
