This same dilemma now )lagues the University in its : illocation of space to different lepartments. For example, the gunnery range located in 'he ROTC building is presently up for grabs and the University s planning to give the space to the music department for a music lab. "I would much rather see vio in bows than guns," said Vice President Harold Brunton. What the University has to deal with fundamentally is institu tional values verses institu tional needs. Before it can give a department a building, the University has to do long range planning to make sure that the space is used most efficiently, Brunton said. As of October, the University has hired full-time architect John Califf to study the prob lem. Califf is looking into the possibility of expanding and renovating the Horseshoe. Here the University has two major problems, both which hinge on the size of the Univer ;ity. The first is the omnipres ent problem of student anonym ity. When a student feels like rothing, he generally tends to act like nothing and con sequently his studies drop. This problem might be allievated by putting students of a preferred major all in the same dormitory. The second problem is that the size of the University lacks focus. In other words, there is little in coordinated architec tural style. "What is needed is better planning with the pre sent buildings," said Bryan. Because the chain of com mand stretches ultimately into the governor's office, there must be some sort of central planning. But there is a draw back. Many times a department organizes its own fund raising for a particular building and so it is not fair to say that all University money is tied up or expended for one department. Garnet and Black Editor Chris Schweickert said the tentative date for distribu tion of annuals is Tuesday, April 17. They will be handed out at the Russell House, but arrangements have not yet been completed for the room. Check the April 16 issue of the Gamecock for final details.
