* I VOL LXIII-No. 45 University of South Carolina, Columbia, S. C. 29208 -- Thursday, April 5, 1973 We will speak loudly, yet log not harsh. Above the holocaust o we shall be heard.' McKinney TC BY BUNNY Gamecock Staff The newly elected-student body officers were inaugurated Monday at the Rutledge 1 Chapel. Rita McKinney, president, Leigh t Leventis, vice president, Trev Williams, sec- c retary, Walter Sanders, treasurer and new senators were sworn into office. After an invocation by Sen. Glenn B. Mann- t ing, David Spinazzolo, the out-going president, 1 delivered his farewell address. "I must confess this past year I've felt a little like the character John Adams from the pro- 1 duction 1776, when he asks 'Is anybody there; does anybody care?" Spinazzolo said. Spinazzolo warned the upcoming officers r that they would "shake their heads in despair I because of an uncaring constituency unwilling 1 to get involved." Spinazzolo said the govern ment, media and union managed in the course of time to establish one of the few traditions C in existence at Carolina: that of continuing I dissension and bickering. "Is this to be the future of student involve ment?" Spinazzolo asked. Spinazzolo also stressed the fact thatohe University misplaces its priorites. "I've been able to view the completion of an expanded football stadium while one of the worst library facilities around remained a pipe dream. "I've been able to enjoy original sculpture obtained at a bargain price of only a few thousand dollars, though perhaps other stu dents wouldn't share this view for fear of ven turing through the many dimly lit areas of our campus." In her inaugural speech, McKinney spoke about her concepts of student government, the -easons for her involvement and the goals she iad set for her term in office as president of he student body. "We will speak loudly, yet logically. We will be direct, but not harsh. Above the holocaust >f the university bureaucracy, we shall be ieard." McKinney said that SGA was a 'representative-type government." She said :hat the government is not at USC to represent my particular group, but all groups. In repres enting the students, McKinney said, the gov arnment must be aware of the various factions >f the student body and consider them all as iable parts and not play one against each ther. In doing this, McKinney said, the student government must be "ever mindful of students' rights." McKinney said the students were the 'inexperienced and green ones."
